Hello,
if your e-brake is stuck then you could look at the unit on the side and there should be a small lever that you can pull to release the brakes if the cable is not working, the cables themselves could be frozen? or something mechanical inside the drums or calipers in the rear that could be stuck and not moving. there is a possibility that the master cylinder is at fault, but rare. you can open the rear wheel bleed valves and see if the vehicle can move? if so, then check the rubber lines to the wheels? to be bad

SOURCE: How do I reinstall the parking brakes on my 2001 GMC Jimmy.

hi from the uk not too conversant with your model ? BUT here in uk the same type of rear calipers for hydraulic disc brakes and a seperate set of brake shoes operate the park brake/s which is internal of the rotor ?? thebrake shoes will have an adjuster manually adjustment when rotor/drum is in place ? so if you look at the area between the top of shoes you may see a threaded rod with a serrated round wheel which when turned on thread will move shoes out one way and in the other ? so to fit rotor you must rotate this wheel so shoes close up enableing to fit rotor/drum over shoes easily ? then secure rotor with screws?? if fitted then you adjust ppark brake shoes by turning with a flat screwdriver via a hole which is/should? be in rotor and will turn in line with this adjuster? tighten brake on then turn back notch by notch till rotor turns free or just? do this b4 you fit the disc pads then repeat on other brake assy on other side? re assemble discpads and pump brakes till hard this then leaves the park brake cable to adjust if req'd if so pull p/brake it should come up approx 4 or 5 clicks to fully lock of brake this allows for what is known as reserve travel left on cable to apply as brake shoes wear ok? hope this helps?

SOURCE: Emergency Brake Adjustment

Ahh they are a real pain in the **** you need to remove the rear wheels calipers caliper anchors then the rotors and then you can adujust the park brake shoes up just untill you feel a bit of drag on the rotor then back them off a bit. Other wise you need to buy the tools to check the adjustment bottom line they are a pain

Can you get to any part of the cable? If so, use a pair of pliers to release it until you can replace the cable.

How can i release my emergency brake

Never heard of a parking brake automatically engaging. It does suffer with sticking brake cables. Are you sure the driver didn't step on the parking brake pedal? It is what I would have done and I have practiced it a number of times! You press the pedal a second time to release it. It is a known issue that the cable sticks, especially if the parking brake is never used.

How to change parking brakes on 2003 dodge ram

  • 1 Determine which type of emergency brakes your Dodge Ram will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for the Dodge Ram have used rear disc brakes since 2001.
  • 2 Release the parking brake pedal completely and raise your vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel with a socket wrench and disconnect the brake caliper from the caliper adapter. Slide the rotor from the axle shaft.
  • 3 Install the new brake rotor onto the axle shaft and complete the installation by reversing the removal steps.
  • 4 Tighten the wheel mounting nuts in the proper sequence with a torque wrench until the nuts are torqued to 47.5 foot/pounds Repeat the tightening sequence to torque the nuts to 95 foot/pounds.
  • 5 Apply and release the park brake pedal to seat and adjust the parking brake cables. Road test the vehicle to ensure the vehicle's brake system is functioning.
  • 6 Place tool C-3919 or the equivalent over the park brake shoes and use the star wheel adjuster to lower the park brake shoes until the lining just touches the jaws on the tool.

Why is the emergency brake cable very loose

    Probabily needs adjustment---
    1. Remove the screw covers, screws and parking brake trim cover.
    2. Turn the adjuster as needed to attain the proper adjustment.

Make sure the brakes do not drag when the parking brake lever is released.
    1. Reinstall the trim cover.
    2. Depress the pedal 2 notches.
    3. Tighten the adjusting nut at the pedal assembly until the rear brakes just begin to drag when rotated.
    4. Release the parking brake lever and check that the wheels do not drag when turned. The parking brake should engage in 3-5 notches when a force of 66 lbs. (294 Nm) is applied to the parking brake pedal.
    5. Lower the vehicle

I had the same thing. just remove the cover from under the steering wheel and you can see the ratchet release lever. You can also remove the metal cover that is under the plastic cover for more visibility. now just reach in with a bit of stiff wire with a hook on the end and pull the lever back to you. that is all the cable does, and voila, the brake is released. now you just have to remember not to push it down again (I did!)

How do you get the emergency brake to release?

Some Pontiac models have a release cable pull located on the drivers side lower dash panel...other models do not have a seperate release pull...the white lettered instructions could be worn off...but you will need to depress the parking pad pedal in order to release...if none of this works, your parking brake cable is stuck, and needs to be lubricated...not a costly thing...have you had the rear brakes serviced? Hope this helps...:)

2009 dodge charger is stuck on an incline and will not come out of park

happens to me allot,it will go in gear but you will have to apply allot more pressure than normal to get it out of park, the steeper the incline the harder you will have to pull on gear shifter( you will almost think your going to break the shifter, but you wont) to keep it from happening next time, when you pull in and put in park before you let off brake pedal apply the emergency brake, and when you get back in car to leave, start and put in gear then release the emergency brake.....
