The yellow cog light came on on the dash of my Z3 now the transmission shifts really hard. What is the problem?
If by "cog" you are describing a circle with gear teeth like points around the outer diameter with an exclamation point inside the circle, it means because of a malfunction, the automatic transmission only shifts in the emergency program. If the symbol is a circle with three rectangular shapes to the outside at both 9 and 3 o'clock, it means that the brake pads have worn down low enough to trip the sensor.
The car is now quite old, and the yellow gear ("cog") light indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the transmission is incorrect. Check fluid level and, if the fluid is murky or off-color, have the transmission serviced and the filter replaced.
