How will a 1991 chevy truck transmission clutch behave if the clutch disk was accidentally installed backwards?

Fixing the clutch and have a problem... I can't get it to work. I have done this job multiple times and havent encountered this yet. It wont go in or out of any gear while engine is running and it there is a creak in the bellhousing that wasnt there before. Can you give me any insight on what is going wrong? Dazed and Confused, J

First of all you said that the disk is in backwards. If this is the case, then it's possible that the friction plate is grinding on the flywheel and isn't transmitting any drive to the gearbox input shaft.
If you are certain that your friction plate has been installed the wrong way around, then you MUST do the job again and re-install. Im most cases an incorrect installation should have been obvious as the clutch cover plate would most often be difficult to tighten down and the friction plate would often be very difficult to align before tightening down the cover plate.

My guess is that you perhaps have another issue. You may have an issue with the release bearing, or release lever/assembly. I am not familiar with your model of vehicle, but does it have a clutch cable or hydraulic action? If it's a cable, then make certain that the cable has been re-adjusted after the new clutch plate install. If your adjustment is too tight then your clutch is basically disengaged and your car won't drive. If it's too loose, then you won't be able to disengage the clutch.
If you have a hydraulic system, then first try bleeding any air from the system and try operating the clutch once more.

Additional questions:

1) Can you select gears with the engine turned off? If no, then check your gear selector mechanism for fitment and operation.

2) If a gear can be selected, then with the vehicle started, does the vehicle move? If no, then check clutch cable adjustment, or remove gearbox and check friction plate, and cover fitment as well as release bearing operation.

3) When you hear a creak in the bell-housing, is the engine running or not running? If not running, then check clutch cable adjustment or bleed hydraulic lines and try again. If no luck, then remove gearbox and start again.

SOURCE: transmission wont go into reverse

The transmission will need to come out and be torn down. The reverse shift fork is probably broken.

SOURCE: 1991 jeep wrangler not shifting into gear could this be clutch

I would first bleed the tranny lines, if that doesnt work then your tranny is out and need to get it replaced. FYI with Jeep Wranglers, It is better to get a new transmission then to rebuild them

Are you having to add fluid? If yes, look for the leak. If no, It's the clutch master cylinder.

SOURCE: Hyd. Slave cylinder WITHOUT bleeder

you have to replace the master and slave. if there is no bleeder, you might get lucky bench bleeding it, but the whole assy, comes from dealer pre-bled. The system is sealed and even to do a clutch or trans, you shouldnt have to take it apart. DO NOT PUSH CLUTCH WITHOUT ALL PARTS HOOKED UP! youll break it.

After changing transmission and clutch in 91 Wrangler, clutch goes to floor. Tried bleeding line but didn't work.

The clutch should go to the floor =) But if it's not disengaging the clutch disk, there's definitely a problem between the pedal and the clutch disk. I'm guessing you have a hydraulic clutch?

206 w reg fitted new clutch but now have no biting point so car will not pull away help

Hello, Who installed the clutch"? Were there a new pressure plate installed? Were there a new throw out bearing installed. Does this 1991 Peugeot 405 have hydraulic or mechanical clutch linkage?
There a couple of reason why the Peugeot wont move and engine is running and the transmission is in gear.

1.. Pressure plate is installed backwards.--Remove transmission and reinstall pressure plate in the correct orientation to the clutch. There is two ways to install it, but one way correctly.

2. Adjustment for the clutch linkage from the pedal in the driver compartment is adjusted to tight and not releasing the clutch to where the clutch pressure is on the pressure plate.

I hope this helps. GB....stewbison

Install a clutch kit and flywheel and after it

You either put the clutch plate in backwards - easy to do when you're starting out -
or you have got one heck of a bad oil leak draining into the clutch area.
One last thing you must be sure there is no tension on the clutch linkage at the transmission end. Check for slack at the clutch peddle -and also at the fork going into the transmission. I am voting you put the clutch plate in backwards - it is printed on the metal and if you do not remember seeing it - you put it in backwards most likely.

How do you install a clutch and front seal on a manual 4-speed transmission for a 1991 Chevy C3500 with a 6.2 liter diesel engine?

This repair requires the removal of the transmission from the vehicle. You would be much better off purchasing a repair manual at any of the local part stores for a detailed description of the tools necessary and procedures. Way too detailed to type out on fixya.
