Hi, first check your clutch. If the clutch is fine you should have problem with your gearbox. Yes you press the clutch but is pressing trust bearing to pressure clutch.
Does it grind the gears in the transmission. If yes, it could be the
clutch/pressure plate. It could be the clutch hydraulic slave cylinder not
working. Check all these thing out before purchasing a new clutch/pressure
plate. When VW is running does if like the vehicle has no get up an on like
maybe the clutch is slipping. GB...stewbison
The clutch is operated by hydraulic system. before you change gears, press the clutch pedal few times to increase the pressure in the hydraulic system. if it improves it then there is a leak in the hydraulic system. comen component to fail are Slave cylinder or masture cylinder. Good luck.....
"IF" you can pull the boot around the clutch release lever back enough. to shine a small flash light into the hole, Have someone shoot some P.B.Blaster(available at most hardware stores) "behind" the throw-out bearing and onto the splined shaft behind that. Avoid getting any spray on the clutch disk or the pressure plate work it back and forth. It might take a couple tries, but this should work.
No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are
badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.
