Bmwx5, driving 60mph on carriageway, plumes of white smoke from exhaust then a slight rattling/ knocking sound, also 5 minutes prior to this felt a lacking in acceleration/turbo.

White smoke means your engine is burning it's antifreeze. You have a problem with either: an intake gasket or a head gasket

When I start engine engine noise or knock, white smoke comes out exhaust,

It is actually steam. The head gasket has failed and the knock is either the pistons trying to compress liquid or the oil has been thinned out from the coolant.

My 01 gmc jimmy made a loud pop and white smoke started blowing out from under the hood. Now it makes a knocking sound but not like its low on oil or inside the motor. I dont have water in my oil and now...

The smoke under hood means that u need replace gasket between exhaust pipe and engine but smoke and knocking is not very good, it looks like your engine pistons has cracks and u r loosing oil by smoke time to time, i'd buy used engine from crashed car with less miles on it

Knocking, overheating, blowing white smoke from the engine (front and back under the plugs), I think the heads are going, any other ideas or things to check?

White smoke tells me coolant is getting into the cylinder's, blown head gaskets or crack heads, have a block test done.

Heap of white smoke on startup but not always

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up.

Faulty glow plugs or control module can cause white smoke on engine start up.

Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.

If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump.

Low compression or air in the fuel system can also be a source of white smoke.

2004 Cadillac Escalade knocking noise

Make sure oil level is adequate.

Also, this could be an exhaust leak that is being closed as the manifold and/or block heats up.
