Usually on the outlet side of the air filter box. But a mass airflow sensor is always going to be in between the air filter and the engine.

SOURCE: location of mass air flow

It should be along the air intake. A block box about 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" held on by 4 ? screws. Easy to replace, but kind of pricey. They make a product for cleaning them. Try that first. Do not touch the wire resistor that goes into the intake. It's delicate.

SOURCE: mass air flow sensor location

3.1 liter - It will be in the air snorkel in between the air filter housing and the throttle body.

3.8 liter - it will be mounted in the throttle body right before the throttle.

Both will have a flat 3 wire connector.

Mass air flow sensor not working properly

hi no more sin, the camshafts have the variable valve timing, not the
air mass sensor which should be a black box at the end of the air
intake snorkel closest to the engine.
get it scanned by a technician to make sure you get the right
information as to where to start.

99 sunfire rough idol and sputters and jerks when taking off fromn a stop light.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

You definitely have a faulty MAF (mass air flow) sensor. The MAF controls the idle of the car that when it's faulty an erratic idle may occur. You may even end up stalling during take off so have the MAF replaced. It is located on the throttle body.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
