If the clutch is good and no air in the hydrolic system, your synchronizers are most likely going bad.

Th400 transmission exploded view

kick down cable not rusted stuck fully out and TH thinks you are passing other cars WOT?
no engine told, of 4 offered day1 new. even a diesel.
1989 oem stock THM-400? NO./

4.3L guessed
full trans code is 1989 !
THM700-R4/4L60/MD8 (4 speed is stock)
TH400 is 3speed not 4. ,now called 3L80 and ended in 1979 ,

but is really 1989 1971-1994 3L80HD (heavy duty version of TH400)<< yes

i just looked in the service manual
it shows this box THM 700R4 transmission. or TH400/3L80HD
and shows
Throttle Valve (TV) or Detent Cable one must not lose vacuum to the modulator of the transmission see 100% engine overload, and wants to use lower gears, so the vacuum must be there
and MOD is color coded, and must not be ignored, it must match the weight of the car or it will not shift correctly. Do not use the wrong MOD ever.

this is not a 4L80E/3L80E box no electric shifts. yes TCC lockup. sure.
TCC relay is ECM controlled. clutch main TC lockup. acts like gear 3.5.

A tuneup does not effect THM turbo hydra matic. box.
unless huge engine power loss subsequent vacuum now wrong.
the box shift, itself.
only mod and TV cable and full engine power, changes it and for sure
the GOVERNOR.

1993 Chevy Silverado will not shift in to 2nd 3rd or Overdrive.

Are you sure its stuck in first gear, Its probably in second.. It sounds like a stuck or open shift solenoid in the tranny (4L60E hydra-matic). Depending on the year and type of tranny this was a default setting to either only second or only third gear, should some electrical or transmission hydraulic fault occur. Another common problem for that year is a faulty ignition switch at the key cylinder. It will fail and not send power to the tranny (thus not powering up the shift solenoids). The default (or limp home mode) is when both solenoids are commanded off. They will be both commanded off in second gear (even when the tranny is operating normally).

Turbo 400 wont shift from 2nd too 3rd

If your clutch pedal feels normal and has no play, its most likely your syncros assisting that gear. The first thing I would do is inspect to see if you have enough fluids in the transmission. Then I would bleed the clutch slave cylinder and see if that helps or check the clutch pedal wire and see if theres any play. Hope this helps!

Some owners of the above models equipped with a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E transaxle with a Julian Date prior to 0045 may comment on a whine noise in PARK and/or NEUTRAL or a Service Engine Soon or Service Vehicle Soon lamp that is illuminated. Upon investigation, a DTC P0741 or P0742 may be found.

Cause:
The above condition may be due to drive sprocket support bearing fluting and/or bearing failure.

Correction:
Replace the drive sprocket support bearing. Inspect the channel plate and drive sprocket for any abnormal wear, Turbine shaft for cut seals and/or nicks, and chain for excessive play due to failed bearings.

Important:
When installing the new bearing, the part number MUST be visible (facing upward). Before installing the drive sprocket, lubricate the bearing assembly with J 36850 assembly lubricant.

Refer to the 4T65-E Unit Repair Section for the installation procedure.

Service Part Information:
Part Number: 24214158
Description: Drive Sprocket Support Bearing

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Its possible that you can use a voltmeter to test for power and ground at the TCC solenoid connector and also resistance across the solenoid. The scan tool is helpful in pulling the codes, commanding the TCC on and off and monitoring the state of command while driving.

Hope help with this (remem, ber comment and rated this).

My car is 1988 camaro and with a 5 speed transmission, and the 3rd and 4th gear wont go into gear. seems like it is going in, but makes a noise, and i have all other gears

on the shift forks in that 5 speed are a thin aluminum ridge that fits into the ring that shifts the gear,, if it was shifted hard, this can break off and you wouldn't be able to **** those gears any longer ,, I have had to fix this same problem on one of my friends cars
