My 97 landcruiser won't start, battery dies very fast, clacking sound-is it the starter

My landcruiser sits for long periods. I had to jump start it today. After driving around to ensure the voltage was good, I turned it off and tried to re-start it and it wouldn't start. It made a clacking sound and the voltage just drained until I got nothing but silence. I think it's the starter, help!

SOURCE: 1994 Toyota Tercel Starter Problems

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function

SOURCE: Car Dies while driving and/or Wont even start after being driven

I would buy a cheap Votage meter from Walmart or Radio Shack and check voltage at the Battery. It should be 12.5 or more. Red positive lead of meter goes to red Battery wire. Black lead goes to black Battery wire on top of Battery.

You can check Alternator charging too, the same way The Voltage should jump to 12.8-13.5 volts. My Toyota would shut off and then start back up after moving the connection to the big fuses in the engine compartment Good Luck.

SOURCE: 95 toyota camry died and turns over but wont crank

same thing happened to my sons' Aries. we replaced timing belt and everything worked great> to confirm broken timing belt, remove valve cover >crank engine over and watch valve train, no movement= broken belt. you can check tech manual but as previously stated if this is not an interferance engine, cranking engine won't run a piston into an open valve. good luck.

SOURCE: 1999 landcruiser has intermittent starting

I had a similar problem with my landcruiser sometimes it would start no probs at all and other times it would start to crank and then stop and you had to try a couple of times to start it. It ended up being the starter motor contacts failing.
Just another thing to look at

04 ford escape 4x4- just died! battery is at 100% removed and tested starter(bad) bought a nee one and installed- still dead! wont start! makes a clacking sound when key is turned to start. please help.

Have you tried to turn the engine over by hand? It is curious that it died as the starter has nothing to do with the engine running. It is only used to start the engine turning over. If the motor died and will not crank with a good starter, there might just be a mechanical reason.

97 jeep wrangler whine at start up. put in mopar new starter and new starter and difficulty starting still

When you say you're having a hard time starting it does that mean it cranks over fine but it just takes a while to start or does that mean the starter is dragging when you try to start it

2001 s10 will jump start. After it sits, I try to start it, it won't start, but the ignition keeps dinging after I turn it off and take the key out. I can jump start it and the dinging stops.

its sounds like a bad ignition switch-try to jiggle it and see if its stop after you have turned key off- also those dinging sounds are to warn you that you have left something on -usually headlights or maybe even your dome lights which would account for your battery dying

You may have internal engine damage . broken cam or can.. try to turn the engine manually with a wrench to see if there is any problem while rotate it. In the cold weather when you start engine especially been sitting for too long, engine part need to be lubricated fast otherwise damage it will occur. check and smell the engine oil for strange condition

My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited has a new battery but won't start. When I try to jump start it, it just makes a clicking sound but won't start.

Most likely you have a bad connection somewhere. Trace the battery cables and clean/tighten all terminals or try jumping to a different lug. You might also try removing the starter and jumping directly to the starter to verify that it is good.

could be poor connection from battery to battery cable terminal. take off both pos. & neg. battery terminals, clean & reinstall, making sure there is a tight connection. if the cables are loose (even just one) or if the battery cable seems degraded with corrosion, they should be replaced. could also do a load-test on the battery... it should stay strong under load, and shouldn't drop to below 11 volts under load. if it does you have a bad battery, even though it may seem good otherwise.

My engine won"t turn over on my 97 cadillac

It could be the starter. It could be a bad battery cable connection. Have you tried jump starting the engine. If it starts, then most likely it's to do with the battery or charging system.
