The timing marks are on the crankshaft pulley. slightly loosen the distributor and use a stroboscopic timing light to pulse the correct setting...adjust distributor anti clockwise or clockwise to set. I f you are still running contact breakers please ensure these are set before doing timing.

The following is instructions for replacing the timing (or camshaft) belt on the 1.8i petrol engine, as fitted to a Freelander. This is the K-series ... With the timing set, thecam sprocket marks should look like this. Posted Image
On the freelander it's done that way so none of the pistons strike the valves like when taking the cylinder head off as these pistons come very close to the valves on these engines but if you take off the crankshaft pulley wheel the true mark will be on the gear that the cambelt sits around use this mark on this gear if you want no1 piston at tdc and set the cams up with their irrelevant marks at the same time
The various gears will all have some kind of "timing mark" on them but every engine is a little different. Best thing to do is to by a manual that details your specific engine's settings. While you are in there it is always a good idea to make sure your tensioner is working correctly before putting it all back together.
with all timing belts, chains, gears, and so on, there are usually markings on the pulleys/gears to match up with the engine to set the timing. One for the valves/cam, and one for the crankshaft...as well as the tensioner, and so on. try looking under a magnifying glass for distinct markings on these gears/pulleys for a proper timing adjustment.
If you have installed the dizzy in correctly ie lined it up for TDC you would use a strobe light on the bottom of the engine timing marks, while turning the dizzy to set it up,if no strobe light and it is installed correctly set the dizzy in the centre leave the bolt slightly loose so you can turn the dizzy, start it up and keep turning it fractionally until it sounds like it's running about right.......
trying to remember as this engine is the same as the rover 1.6 in the rover series of cars ,the crank mark is on the front pulley and the cam is ,damm i just cannot remember and the amount i have done .i think its on the cam two opposing lugs ,anyway heres what to do providing its the 4 cyl engine and not some special for the american market ,right scanned and uploaded a pic for you but it might take a time to be censored before you can see it .if you still cannot do it then answer and i can tell yuo how to do it with no timing marks but whatever you do make sure you turn engine over by hand 360? before you try the startert motor
You need to specify engine type, but the following videos of the same engine type in MG and Rover cars should help (kv6 petrol 2.5L and rover k series -only single on the last one but similar principle)
