You should always engage the handbrake before parking but if you are like me and don't the transmission locks up. You can try having someone rock the car or push it ( not good for the transmission ). You can jack up one of the back tires ( being careful of the others ) when the wheel is mobile it will free up the transmission ( this DOES work ). Or it could be the shifter alignment cable this sometimes becomes stretched and needs replacement. There is also a clip on it that can become jammed. If you know someone who does well with cars have them take a look for you. My dealer wanted to soak me for $1800 not including tow of over $200. Hope these suggestions work for you

How to put 2007 Chrysler300 gear into natural when the car battery is dead and the key stopped working

If you're unable to push the gear shift into neutral in a 2007 Chrysler 300 when the car battery is dead and the key has stopped working, there is a solution that can help. You can locate the shift interlock override mechanism to manually put the vehicle into neutral. First, remove the plastic cover or cap located near the gear lever to reveal the shift interlock override slot. Insert a small screwdriver or a similar tool into the slot and apply gentle pressure while simultaneously attempting to move the gear lever into neutral. This should release the shift interlock mechanism and allow you to shift the car into neutral. It's important to exercise caution and consult the vehicle's manual for precise instructions tailored to your specific model, as the process may vary slightly.

My friend lent me her car while shes on holidays and the button on the gear stick wont push in and i am stuck in park. its a 4 door hyundai, not sure of make but i think its around 1999. you have to leave...

the brake light switch controls the shift lockout solenoid. perhaps this brake light switch is ajar or misaligned or inoperative. check to see if brake lights are working. there is an override to the shift lever lockout.

Shifter interlock

what car, you never said? NOR YEAR?
park lock out feature;. its broken , they do that. (BTSI system)
got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

no car/year, you get the generic answer.
there is a park lockout DEFEATER on most cars, (never on new cars, due to federal bs)

on the shift console, see the defeat device.
the operators guide covers this. its for EMERGENCIES.
pick one.
http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/jeep/

the A/T box,
Brakes + handle button press, unlocks BTSI

on 2005 and up , no bypass
if the key gets locked too, that tells you what is bad , on newer jeeps
on newer jeeps read this
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=366251

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.
Folks in Sanfranciso, just roll eyes at you, new in town>?

now the grand cherroke,, why not post car model, and year, dang.

Brake/Transmission Interlock Manual Override Your vehicle may be equipped with a shift lock manual override. The manual override may be used in the event that the shift lever should fail to move from PARK with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal pressed. To operate the shift lock manual override, perform the following steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. 2. Firmly set the parking brake. 3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully remove the shift lock manual override cover, which is located on the PRNDL bezel. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. Using the screwdriver, reach into the manual override opening. Press and hold the shift lock lever down. Interlock Manual Override end quote.
no all jeeps have this,

Can't shift gear

check the fuse for your brake lights, check your brake light switch. If the brake lights don't go on your car will not shift out of park. The shifter should have an override button. look for an access hole (cover) near the shifter, pop the cover off and push a pencil down there to shift. check your owners manual for specific information on the use of the override button

Cannot shift out of drive, tried the manual override with no success, please help

It probally has an electronic shift control unit.I had a Honda Accord that did the same thing. It was located under passenger side floor mat. The unit would keep it from shifting out of gear,it overrides the manual override. I would call a dealer and ask if your car has one. But I say 70% chance your car has one too.

Car won't shift out of park with brake pedal down dodge stratus 2005

The brake/shifter interlock switch is bad. You can manually override the switch. Your owner's manual should have instructions on overriding the switch.

2002 Kia Spectra stuck gear shift

Sounds like you need a new shifter assembly, or the brake switch. Most likely will be the shifter though if you can move it out of park with the override.

An automatic 2002 Mazda Millenia V6 2.5L is stuck in park

When you experience this problem, check to see if your brake lights are coming on. It could be as simple as a brake light switch malfunction. If the brake lights are functioning as the problem is occurring then you could for example have a problem with the shift interlock solenoid.
