SOURCE: 1989 Ford ranger rear antilock light on rear brakes lock up

metal particles on the trigger wheel sensor of the rear differential case, this causes a loose of signal and the light to come on. also a broken tooth on the trigger wheel inside the diff can cause this or a dirty/corroded connection to the sensor from water intrusion.

SOURCE: replace rear brakes adjust handbrake

The hand brake hardly ever needs ajusting. See your hand brake mechanincly spreads your rear brake shose inside the drum. Therefore just replace your rear shoes and make sure there ajusted right and you should have no more problems with that part of your car. PS make sure you put some 3M paste on the contact points on your backing plate to avoid a squeak in the near future.

SOURCE: how to adjust emergency brake on 1999 ford ranger?

First pull the plug in the braka adjusting tool and make sure you still have enought shoe left to adjust then follow the cable from the rear brakes to the Y that connets the to brake cables then get a wire brush and brush off the threded end of the Y spray with WD 40 and then unlock the locking nut using two wrenches to hold one nut while removing the other then adjust the single end of the Y nut towards the joining part of the Y adjust it till cable is fairly snug jack up the rig so the wheels are off the ground and make sure the wheels still turn freely. are you sure that the auto ajusters are working? if you see the brake lining is less than 1/16 of an inch the thickness of a dime then replace the brake shoes first. If you need more information let me know and if you adjust the cable and need to replace the shoes later you will have to back off the nut to get the shoes on. thanks for using Fixya and if this was helpful please rate.

sounds like you have it apart and not so sure about reassembly. If these are drum brakes try looking at the drum brake change videos on Youtube, ericthecarguy (ETCG) is a good one. Drum brakes are all basically similar with the main difference usually around self adjusters.

Spongy brake pedal on 2003 Frod escort zx2.

loosen of the hand-brake adjustment and press the brake pedal a few times to self adjust the rear brakes.
Re-tighten the handbrake adj last.
Front brake sounds like a seized caliper,If possible remove caliper and clean and lubricate the piston.
This may work but replacement caliper may be the only other solution.Make sure the caliper slides are also clean and lubricated and the brake pads are in good order.(TRY THIS FIRST)
Also new brake shoes can make the pedal feel spongy for a couple of hundred miles until they have been run in.

Brakes grab occasionally.

It sounds like you don't have the shoes adjusted properly. If they don't drag on the drums, a little, they will extend too far and bind. Get the back of the truck off the ground, so you can spin the back wheels and adjust the brake shoes until you have some drag, this should solve your problem. Good luck.
