On start up there was a load tappet noise (clapping) which faded away on my Renault Modus 1.4 16v, should I be worried ?

Wherever the engine stops at least a couple of valves will remain open meaning the maximum valve spring pressure is applied to those hydraulic tappets and a chance the oil will be squeezed out when the engine stands idle for a while. If a tappet or hydraulic lifter is lazy or the oil supply is low, it can take a while for it to recover when the engine is started.

Older VW and the older Ford Mondeo used to be particularly affected and sometimes could take 20 miles of driving before the noise disappeared.

There are engine oil additives designed to liven up lazy tappets.

On my 2006 Buick Rendezvous there is a knocking noise from the motor....dont k ow what it is

See if you can identify where under the hood the noise is coming from. If it's truly an engine noise and not a device attached to the belt, depends on whether it's a piston problem, or a stuck, collapsed or plugged hydraulic lifter (both can make a similar noise). Varnished or dry hydraulic lifters are usually the problem, but only a qualified mechanic can determine which it is, and if it's a piston, it can cause serious engine damage.

Slight tapping noise from engine when accelerating when engine is warm.Started about 3 days ago but hasnt got any worse.Doesnt do it when cold.

tap usually associated with lifters when vehicle warms up oil thins out and a bad or worn lifter will make a tapping noise --other oil level low --oil needs changing --low level will starve rockers/push rods/and lifters which will also cause tap ---damaged /dirty{sludge oil can cause same problems

Valve tap cause

Most engines now use hydraulic lifters and they can leak a little, this causes space between then lifter and the push rod. This results in a tapping noise that goes away when they get warm or fill back up.

1999 MITSUBISHI COLT RODEO V6 HYDRAULIC LIFTERS IS MAKING A NOISE.WHAT CAN I DO?IT IS LIKE A TAPPING SOUND.

First check your oil, and change it if necessary. Low oil will cause the lifters to tap. I wouild recommend adding some high milage oil treatment, like Slick 50. If your oil is good and full, the lifters may be damaged. You can take a quart of transmission fluid or diesel fuel to the gasoline. It will cause it to smoke a little but it may free up sticky lifters. If that doesn't work, you probably have damage to your lifters.

Makes a knocking noise when starts and then goes away.

if this engine has hydraulic valve lifters, then it could be a weak hydraulic lifter that pumps up once the oil warms up. Hopefully you dont have low oil pressure. Does the oil light stay on for a while after you start the engine. If it does that could cause your engine to knock

Hi I have a 1994 Renault Megan and on cold mornings I sometimes get a tapping noise from the front engine. Can anyone let me know what this could be?

In cold mornings oil is very thick, will take a little time for the oil pump to pump it up to the lifter's, after that warm up and it's ok, also try a thiner oil.

Lifter making noise

depends, how long between oil changes, how many miles, try and engine flush, sometimes debrise adn sludge will cause a lifter to stick and not move freely causing the tapping noise you hear, if this doesn't fix or quiet the problem it may be to far gone, but if you really love the car get a tear down manual and go to work....put aside a weekend and about 500 dollars it'll be a job
