frist disconnect the negative side of the battery and remove the fuse for the airbags and unplug all the plugs on the steering wheel remove the bolts from the floor and disconnect the steering wheel from the gear box

From my experiance, your ok, disconnecting the battery on that year car was common practise to clear computor codes, sound to me like the tork converter
lock out selonoid has gone bad, I don't remember how to test them, but if I can remember the symptoms, stalling at stopes, ruff idle in gear, slow pick up from a stop. yep that's it.,

How do I reset the fuel pump shut off switch on a 89 tempo
u just push the button, u will feel it click. go to link to see more info on this switch, which is called the "FUEL PUMP INERTIA SWITCH" the info is the sam for your 89 as the 94.
