I have similar problem in that my rad cooling fan won't run when hooked up to temp sending unit. Sending unit works okay, displaying what seems like proper temps on inside gauge, rising & falling with engine temp. However, my fan does NOT turn on when wire unplugged from sending unit. Tested fan motor with 12v applied directly & it runs fine, so motor okay.

Haynes manual identified a faulty cooling fan relay (in a situation with your symptoms), which is mounted on the drivers side fender of the engine compartment with 1 other on a support bracket (2 others on same bracket if you have ABS), facing forward toward headlight (NOT nearby ones that are parallel to fender, which has 3 relays on a support bracket). This should work in your case, but didn't in mine.

Several of these close-together relays have the same # on them, so you could swap 2, to see if this is your problem, since normally 2 or 3 relays wouldn't fail at same time. To be sure, I bought a new generic relay of proper # from local auto parts store -- about $10-12 I think -- and installed it in the right place but fan still didn't work. Swapped the 2 relays next to each other (there are only 2 on my forward-facing bracket), both with same #, and still no go.

I'm TOTALLY STUMPED on mine, but yours should work with a functioning relay of proper #. Let me know how it goes.

If anyone has suggestions for my related problem, I'm all ears!

Check the connection betwteen the temp sensor, located on the block and check your fuses/relays. It may help if you pull and reseat each fuse. This is free and saves a lot of headache swapping out parts.

SOURCE: fuel gauge on 1993 Dodge Dakota V8

Definitely the gauge can be changed, provided the float in the fuel tank is OK, i.e. no leaks. This float connects to a potentiometer which records the current flowing thru it and displays it in the gauge. So before replacing the gauge measure the current and match that against the quantity of fuel in the tank...............sodeep

Why won't Rad fan run if fan motor, fan relay, temp sender all okay?

check terminals on the ECM
the circuit is when the coolant temp sensor ( not the gauge sender) reaches a predetermined setting , power is supplied to the ECM which in turn activates the fan relay and switches on the fan
there are normally 2 fuses in the circuit
the gauge sender is normally a single wire unit and the sensor unit has 4 wires to it

Cooling fan wont turn on

you are expecting the wrong temperature unit to control the fan. The temperature sender unit controls the temperature gauge and the temperature sensor unit controls the fan operation. It allows current to go to the ECM and when a pre set temperature is reached the ECM activates a relay and the fan starts . Two completely different units to do two different jobs so if it is doing what you say then there is a possibility that the wires are crossed or shorted.

1990 gmc K1500 5.7L, temp. gauge not working:

To review, you have two temp sensors, one for the gauge on the dash and one for the computer. If you unplug the sensor for the computer the reading will be minus 30 degrees or over 300 which will make it very hard to start. Unplugging the sensor for the gauge would have no effect on the computer.
According to the wiring diagram, the wire for the temp gauge is green, and the wires for the temp sensor for the computer are yellow and black.

My 1994 chevrolet 2500 6.5 diesel water temp does not work changed temp sensor and thermostat not overheating ?

When you uplug the wire from the temp sending unit, the RPM should increase from about 750 to 1000. This cold condition causes the computer to react this way. If this is happening, it is a good indication that the wiring is OK, then I would start with the gauge and the wire connection on the gauge. Trace the wiring back from there to the sending unit and look for damage or a loose/unplugged connector.

Temp gauge shows hot even if engine has been off overnight?

Locate the temperature sending unit and pull the wire off of it. Turn the key to the on position (do not start) then have someone touch that wire to a ground source and the temp gauge should go from one extreme to another (cold to hot). If the gauge does that, you have a bad sending unit...if it does not move, you have a bad gauge or problem with the wiring to the gauge.

All the temp sending unit does is act like a variable resistor depending on the coolant temp...if it is bad, it will give you a false reading.

Temp gauge

with the fan kicking on normally that means that the coolant temp sensor is functioning fine, it sends a signal to the ecm to turn the fans on and off. have you had the coolant flushed lately? if so there could be an air bubble in there that needs bled out, a bad radiator cap, make sure coolant is at proper level, and is flowing and that both the upper and lower radiator hoses are getting equally warm, if not water pump may not be pumping, make sure that the serpentine belt is tight enough with no oil leaking on it making it slip. if all that is check you need to look at the gauge, and if the fans always kick on when the temp raises and then off when temp lowers. locate the temp sensor normally on the intake manifold on those, some i have found on top of thermostat housing and unplug and see what gauge does. maybe just bad gauge. is car running any different or is it running fine? hope something here helps, just let me know.
