Why is My truck (a Diesel) giving me a hard time starting after its warmed up?

Start in the morning just fine. after running a while and then shutting off, it turns over fine but won't catch. The pedal seems to drop to the floor. Now I pump the accelerator pedal and it regains some resistance then it might start. I've had the truck for 120 k miles now it has 330k on it with no problems at all other than the starter and replacing the clutch at 290K. Any suggestions?

Injector pump is the most likely cause and they are not cheap.

could be that the electronic throttle could be icing up. just remove the air cleaner and have someone cycle the key. the throttlebody will cycle prior to starting to do a self check. chrysler has a tsb out for this concern. tsb # 14-002-05

SOURCE: clutch position sensor on dodge 2500

Jim, I have the same problem. Looking in my Chilton's manual doesn't help much. But, if you look at the firewall from the driver's seat, where the clutch master cylinder rod goes through the firewall, you will see a plastic cylinder around the rod. There should be a wire that goes from that plastic cylinder and connects into a wiring harness. The manual says that if you separate the clutch position sensor wire from the wiring harness, and jumper the two contacts at that connection in the wiring harness, you will bypass the clutch position sensor switch. I have not yet done this but it is the recommended method of debugging starting problems. If you continue to have problems, I can email to you the section of the Chilton's manual for evaluating the starting system. At least I think I can get my computer to copy this section of the manual. The manual does not give the location of the clutch position sensor but that is the only location i can find that meets the description. I have a 1999 Ram 3500 4WD diesel quad cab.

You have fuel runback.Replace the injector leak off pipes then try.If this does not work then have a non return valve fitted to your fuel supply pipe close as possible to the punp.Hope that was helpfull good luck.

2003 S-10 2.2 stalls after it warms up when pulling out in in 1st gear

Sounds like it could be a fuel delivery problem. Could be getting too much fuel at takeoff causing it to stall, this being caused by the computer still holding it in cold start mode because the water temperature sending unit is faulty and stuck in a closed position not telling the computer to shut off cold start mode. If this is the case, it would be hard to start after warmed up and using a lot more fuel than normal. If, in act, the engine is not getting enough fuel at takeoff, it could still be the temp sending unit not allowing a signal thru to the computer telling it to place the engine in cold start mode and not giving it enough fuel. This is evident when the engine again is hard to start first thing in the morning. After started and warmed up, it runs fine. Have said temperature checked or changed.

Have the diesel version 1996 e class. something

With the diesel engines you have to let the ignition coil warm up before you will have any luck cranking it. Diesel cars are no good in subzero temperatures. I had the same problem with my 92 300D Turbo and when i took it to MB they told me it was because i wasnt letting the coils heat up long enough.

Hard Starting in morning

Do mean you have hard time communicating with a scanner at the OBDII connector, if so make sure you power at pin16 at diagnostic connector, also we have seen issue with glowplugs not working properly causing hard start when cold and starts fine after warm-up
You can check for glowplugs operation at initial key-of before cranking by checking for voltage at each glowplug connector with a multimeter.

it sounds like your fuel lines aren't maintaining pressure and the angle is allowing too much fuel to drain out of the lines. i have the same issue with and older f350 diesel if i let it sit a while and it doesn't get started.
