1993 Escort LX won't run or start unless the Mass Airflow Sensor is unplugged?

Car was running fine and then lost power and quit. Fuel pressure and timing belt are fine. Replacing the MAS didn't help. Same result. Engine only runs now when MAS is unplugged. When unplugged, the "Check Engine" dashlight stays on as it should. Any ideas about how to diagnose this problem? Or... what is the consequence of keeping the MAS unplugged?

SOURCE: 1998 Ford Expedition wont stay running

it is probably the MAFS, the MAFS tells the computer how much air is coming in and if it is bad the ECU will not be able to work properly, it is an integral part of the system,

one way to check the MAFS is to unplug it and try to start the vehicle, if the problem is better then replace the MAFS

Edit: also try to clean the MAFS with brake cleaner, sometimes dirt and oil will cause a MAFS to act up, it may be hard to get to the sensor wires but if you take the MAFS all the way off of the vehicle and just spray the unit down well you should be able to clean any larger debris off of the sensor wire

1985 toyota camry unplug mass air flow sensor engine will start plug back in engine dies

There is a switch in the airflow meter that keeps the fuel pump relay closed as long as there is airflow. With the meter unplugged, the pump should not run except when the key is turned to start. It would seem to me that you have a wiring issue. Try jumping the fuel pump relay so the pump runs whenever the key is on. (Remove the relay and jump the pump wire to the accessory wire--see top left diagram.) This defeats the safety feature but will keep the pump running.

I have a 1986 gts corrolla that will not run unless air flow meter is held open

Now if your old fuel pump was loosing pressure it tends to lean out Overheating your catalytic converter and melting it so exhaust gasses can't flow To test this is easy just remove the two bolts holding it on the engine pipe Start the engine if runs fine replace cat converter

CAR WON,T STAY RUNNING REPLACE IDLE CONTROL SENSOR,EGR,MAP SENSOR,STOP ALL AIR LEAKS.

Have you checked fuel pressure? Maybe the fuel pump or fuel filter is not providing enough pressure at the fuel rail for the injectors to work.
Also, clean the mass air flow sensor with a sensor- safe cleaner.
Good luck.

I unplugged the Mass Airflow Sensor and my truck runs better. I'm told by parts suppliers there is no Mass Airflow Sensor. What part did I unplug and will it damage the engine to run without it?

Most likely if there is no mass air sensor you actually unplugged the inlet air temperature sensor IAT. This is a little bead like thermistor that sits in the ducted air stream to measure incoming air temperature. Without an air mass sensor your engine will have instead a manifold absolute (air) pressure MAP sensor. This measures the absolute air pressure (the difference between the atmospheric air pressure outside and the drop in pressure inside) in the inlet manifold. The drop in pressure in conjunction with air temperature allows the engine control unit to calculate the amount of air in the engine to which it adds the correct amount of fuel per each injection cycle. The loss of the IAT signal is not critical as the ECU will assume a default value. However when extreme low temperatures are encountered the absence of the IAT may be become noticeable as the charge of air entering the engine will be denser and as a consequence the fuel mix will be much leaner; maybe to lean to start up.

FIRING ORDER & CAR QUITS WHEN YOU PLUG IN MASSIVE AIR FLOW SENSOR

Hello,

You really need to start with basic troubleshooting. Is there spark to the spark plugs? Do you hear the fuel pump prime during initial Key On & during Engine Cranking?

Why did you change the MAF (mass airflow sensor)?
