SOURCE: 1992 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes Benz 400... Problem:
Hello, What you could have is and ignition problem. I have had to replace many distributor caps (2) and rotor buttons (2) on this model to solve this same problem.
I hope this helps.

I had same problem with my 1994 SL600. Also when this happens you will lose your interior door lights when you open the doors. My problem was solved by taking out the, A-white 40 amp 12V Relay and cleaning off the 6-prongs and reinstalling. It is located in the box underhood ahead of the main fuse box. Just need a phillips screwdriver. It is the fartherest relay in back left. I had to pull the one out in front of it to be able to remove the white one. You can hear it click when you push in dooropen switch. When working right you do not hear it. Hope this helps.

There are numerous possibilities. Each would have to be tested to see what the problem is.
Is the battery good? to do two checks at once, turn the lights on and try to start it. Do the lights come on? Do they dim when you try to start it?
If the lights come on the battery is probably good. If they dim a lot when you try to start the car then the battery is bad.
I bet they come on but dont dim at all when you try to start it.
Is the fuse to the starter good? check the fuses to make sure the one for the start circuit is not bad.
Is the current from the ignition making it to the start relay?
To test this you will have to have a test meter and a helper. If the meter shows current getting to the start relay then the starter is bad. If there is no current then the ignition switch or wiring from the ignition switch is bad.
The last problem I fixed that was just like this turned out to be a burned out fusible link on a chevy suburban.
Testing always reveals the problem.
Note: The above assumes no security malfunctions of a built in security system.
