If the switch is bad, you can bypass it with a power and ground wire to the motor. If the motor is bad, you have to find it and disassemble it and turn it by hand. Usually the motor is at the back, bottom of the seat. Power seats are a pain in the rear. I pull the seats out to fix them, even this can be a major pain.
Not really a cheap way to fix it. You have a motor and cables that turn to move the seat. The motor and cables would need to be removed to allow the seat to move, then there would be nothing to keep the seat in place unless you put the motor back. A manual seat uses a latch and slotted track to move the seat and lock in place.
The gear on the track has more than likely sheared from the motor. Unfortunately, the only way to fix this is to replace the power seat assembly. You can get one at a local salvage yard and bolt your original seat to the power assembly so that it will still match.
You might want to try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnecting it. This procedure fixed my seat that was not working. It works fine now. I know it sounds too good to be true but it usually works
Your power seat can not be adjusted manually, if the motor in the seat is bad then yes you will have to replace it. Go to the motor under the seat and unplug it, test the wiring harness end of the connection for power with a meter, while operating the seat position, if you get power then the motor is bad, if you do not then you need to check the wires and fuses that supply that power, and the switch. Hope this helps, let me know
If it is power seat electric motor is faulty. For mechanical you need to spray the rails under the seat. There is the grease at any autostore or Walmart for unscrewing rusty bolts. It will be helpfull. After you do thet push seat forward and back afterwards.
It will go
Good Luck
I had the same problem and I was talking to a neighbor, and he had a 97 S10 and he said he had the same problem and it was the motor for the power seats (some type of a short in the motor). best idea is move the seats the way you want them and go under the seats and unplug the power seat motor... it fix my neighbors and it fixed mine.
