Brake shift interlock switch

I have a 2006 mdx, and it is my garage. It will not start. Battery is dead, but i have a portable jump starter. On attempting to start with portable starter, the dash lights power up, etc. but when turning key a loud, rapid series of clicking sounds can be heard. With the key in the full on position, and with foot on the brake pedal, it is impossible to move the shifter out of park. I have not yet had my repairs due to the brake shift interlock switch. I am not sure how I can even get the car towed, considering I can not get it into neutral to push it out of the garage. What should I do, any suggestions?

The battery is so dead that a jumper will not have the amps to start the car. The clicking sound is from the starter trying to turn. First I would go a head and replace the battery with one you no to be fully charged and try again.

SOURCE: Engine will not turn over or start when in park with key on.

You linkage is working properly it sounds like, especially if the indicator for "D, R, N", etc are lining up. However the linkage or the neutral safety switch may need to be adjusted. More than likely, it's your neutral safety switch.

The brake pedal release has nothing to do with the neutral safety switch when switching gears.

The brake pedal release is just a safety to prevent you from pushing the gear shifter accidentally. Actually, you should be able to start the truck without holding the brakes.

If the neutral safety switch is bad or misaligned, it'll do exactly what you're describing. If pulling it down in neutral starts the truck, then that's a sure indicator.

SOURCE: Batterty dead. Check engine light/Antifreeze pouring

The main problem could be a well known cobalt ignition issue. check all fuses, wires, and connections if you've worked on cars before and call to see if you still have any warranty left. This should be handled by a chevy dealer or chevy trained mechanic...to isolate the issue fast and avoid repeat visits to get er done.

IF THE CAR WON'T TAKE A JUMP THAN YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. BUT FIRST CHECK THE TERMINALS FOR CORROSION AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE TIGHT. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU. PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR AN HONEST RATING. BEST OF LUCK. P.S. CHECK ALL THE FUSES BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW BATTERY.

Starter wont crank ,engine wont start even when i cross starter and starter turns engine over, shifter wont come out of park what do i need to check

I can't help much w/o year--make--model? Do you have a security system on this vehicle?
Most starters have two voltage circuits, one comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the start position, may be wired through neutral switch, depending on the tranny, maybe you have a starter relay? The starter motor usually grounds through the engine block. The fact you can jump the starter motor and it cranks, sounds like the ground is ok. Use a test light, check for voltage on those two voltage terminals. Make sure tranny is out of gear and parking brake is set.
Some makes and models have shift-interlock, you can't shift it unless you step on the brake. Do the brake lites work? If not fix that first.
Some makes and models have a shift-interlock bypass button so you can press the button, then shift into neutral. Parking brake set.

Can't Shift To Neutral with a Dead Battery

I am not sure about the Impala but the SAAB (also made by GM) has a small slot near the shifter where you can insert your key or screw driver (something flat) to release it from park when the car cannot be powered up.

2008 MDX will not start just clicks

corroded battery terminals, clean them, and try jumper cables.
both way use same crappy terms.
what transmission A/T or M/T my guess, A/T
so wiggle the gear shift, try neutral starts. this is the PRNDL switch
wiggling it finds new fresh brass on the switch contacts,
wiggle as you crank the key.
if that fails
then hot wire the starter solenoid.
if that act causes cranking, then the starter and battery and cables are good. and means the KEY LINE is bad.
if no crank , hot wired, then that means the starter bad. (battery good , battery charged in all cases)

see hot wiring here.

in a nut shell
1: battery charged at 12.6vdc. rested.
2: chock wheels, all brakes set., in PARK (or M/T in neutral.)
3: gain access to the starter
4: unplug the key line (that is the tiny wire) on starter solenoid.
5: keys in pocket
6: jumper the solenoid tiny wire, to the big outboard lug on solenoid.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
it wont start, keys are in pocket.
the starter is good, i save you 1/2 the diagnosis. in 1 simple step
put the wire back removed in #4
if its dead, the KEY line is dead. ask how to fix that. next. i f so be...

How do you shift into neutral when battery is dead? Pilot was in my garage and I needed to roll it out to jump start battery but could not shift into neutral.

Follow these steps:
1. Pull up the brake
2. There is a shift lock release switch available under your gear cover - remove it by using a screwdriver
3. Put the screwdriver in the shift-lock release switch and press on it
4. Now you can change the gear from park to neutral
5. You would need to buy a new cover

The battery is dead and the car is in the garage and when I turn the key to switch it out of parking gear it wont go I need to push it out of the garage

YOU NEED BATTERY POWER TO ENERGIZE THE BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID TO SHIFT TRANSMISSION TO ANY GEAR.TRY USING A JUMPER BOOSTER BATTERY TO POWER CAR UP ENOUGH TO SHIFT IT OUT OF PARK TO MOVE IT.

I installed a new battery but the car will not turn over.Could the starter be the problem? If so how do you no for sure what the problem is? Thanks

Be sure your car is in Park or Neutral if it is an automatic, or in Neutral with emergency brake set if a stick shift. If you have a set of jumper cables take one and jump the POS cable from one side of the main cable connection on the Starter solenoid to the opposite side of the Solenoid.

If the Starter is good it will crank. If the Starter does not crank it is bad. Next, you need to determine why the Solenoid does not work when the Starter is good. There is a small wire called a tickler and it makes the Solenoid work. The tickler gets its power from the Key switch when you turn the Key to Start. If the tickler has power, then the Solenoid is bad if it does not make the Starter turn.

If the tickler wire is dead you need a testlight or a 12 Volt multimeter. You disconnect the tickler wire and check for power on this wire. There is a Interlock switch on the clutch pedal lever, or on Automatics in the shift linkage. If your foot hit this switch it could be out of position or broken. The Brake switch can also be a part of the Interlock.

If you still do not have power at the tickler, your Ignition switch is probably bad and you need to replace it. I hope this information will help you.

If the battery is dead, the shift interlock solenoid will not disengage the gear shift mechanism. You have to have sufficient current through the brake switch to disengage the interlock. Charging or replacing the battery should do it. Hope this helps
