Gets hot, does not over heat, but turn it off and it wont start again until it down, how do i fix it

  • Allen Prater May 25, 2014

Not enough information. If it cranks real slow,it is the starter. It gets hot and the fields and armature swell from the heat and after it cools they shrink back and it will turn over faster again. If it cranks fast but won't start, the check the things the other guys have already told you.

That used to happen to me with my old chevy 350 v8. one time when it was happening some guy told me to hold the pedal to the floor while cranking it, and it actually worked. it probably has something to do with gas evaporating faster because the engine is so hot.

Does it crank,Turn over? If not it probably is a problem called "heat soak".. the starter is hot just from engine heat and wil not function. If it cranks but will not start i would check to see if it is getting spark.. if not than check the IGN module in the distributer. Do not replace it until you have it checked, costly part, i think Orilly auto parts has a machine to check it.. Could also be a ign coil going bad.. (coil slight chance)

Mazda 323 1985 runs fine when cold after the car heats up it will randomly die. Just cuts out completely. Won't start straight away but after 30sec it will start like nothing was wrong. Then it will...

This is going to be tough to fix. Chances are its a relay or the ignition module, but until it gets to where it will not start for several minutes or not at all, you won't know if you have fixed it or not.
Something is getting hot, cooling off, then getting hot again.

Tries to turn over then wont let it sit awhile then it starts

It could be starter heatsoak (starter gets hot from engine heat and needs to cool down first).
You can fix it by putting heat wrap on the starter.

My car wont turn on when it gets hot outside

When won't start try removeing the gas cap (slowly) to release any pressure in tank. Let me know if this helps.

I owned a 96 nissan sentra and am be perform a lot repair and replacing items and still have problem,it does work for while but when get hot doesn't turn on at all after cold down start again

When it is hot, if the starter will not turn the engine over, or the starter is not turning at all, replace the starter as it is failing due to the heat.

If the car is cutting off when it heats up, and not starting again until it has cooled down, this means the ECU, or a sensor is failing under the heat.

93 seville sts runs great and then after driving wont star fot 30 min to an hr. any easy solutions?

If/when you do get it started, do you have to hold the petal to the floor or give it a lot of gas to 'clear' it up again? Does it smoke when you first start it up? If so, you might have a leaking injector (s), the o-rings allow pressure to push gas into cylinders when you shut down, flooding the cylinder-will cause hard starting. If this is not the case, consider a heat-sink kind of situation with the crank sensor-it gets hot with normal driving, and gets even hotter with heat-soak when shut down and changes electrical properties (specifically resistance) until it cools down again. change the crank sensor.

96 F 150 5.0l stalls out. possibley heat related. wont restart right away. 2x have gotten restarted after 10 min. both times on highway. seems like ign. cant troubleshoot since it restarts. driving me...

The coil wire slide on type ( not Bolt on ) have a tendansy to expand if they get to hot, thus causing an open in your ignition system and shutting down your engine. much the same as driving down the highway and sudenly turning off your key. After a period of cool down you turn the key and the motor firers up right away because the coil cap has had a chance to cool down as well and cuntract to its original shape ounce again and is ounce again making proper contact, untill it gets to hot again and then the same thing will happen.Solution replace the coil half cap and wires to it.

Is there a thermostat shut off switch . car runs

The amount that it gets hot is a clue but theres no shut off switch. It's possible that the car is over heating and the temp gauge does'nt have enought water over it to report the problem. once the cooling system is cleared as it's full circulating and the fan will come on when it's hot ( disconnect the temp. switch on the therostate cover on the top of the transmission, ( the stat is in the lower hose ) with it disconnected and the key on the fan should be on and connected f till it's real hot. The crank senser or distrubutor module can can too hot and shut down too

Car will start run but when i get out and leave it for more than 30 mins it wont start back up and i have to wait over an hour untill it starts again

Will it turn over? it not your starter is getting hot and not working. If yes most likely your coil is getting hot and breaking down.
