Why does the check engine light keeps coming back on after repairing/replacing secondary air injection system, code P0410?

Need to pass emissions and it has failed twice due to drive cycle. The check engine light comes back on before drive cycle is activated.

Thanks Serena....unfortunately we can no longer ignore the light due to mandatory emissions test to obtain license plates.

A lot of times you actually have to drive the vehicle in order for the engine light to reset. sometimes you can have the engine light reset with a scan tool unless a hard-fault code thenone has to do was known as the drive cycle.this could very firm anywheres to 72 150 miles depending on the manufacturer.

Thanks Mike, this problem has become very expensive. Over $600 for parts/labor, gas & time.

SOURCE: Secondary air supply failure

I have a 2005 Envoy with a 4.2..... Just recently the check engine light illuminated so I read the code after replacing the 20amp fuse labeled cigar. My OBDII connection had no power so if you plug your reader in and nothing check the fuse under the hood labeled "cigar"
After pulling the code P0410 Secondary Air Injection Malfunction I checked the operation of the air pump by removing the hose connected to the solenoid. By the way the solenoid is located on the pass side of the engine top towards the back. After pulling the hose off the solenoid I started the vehicle when it was cold and after 20 seconds or so the pump should turn on and blow air out of the hose. Once I verified the pump was operating I pulled the solenoid then placing jumpers from the Positive & Negative of the battery to the pins on the solenoid. You should be able to hear the solenoid click which says its operating. But mine did nothing so I read across the pins with an Ohm meter and verified the coil was good.
So take some good penetrating oil and fill the inside of the valve with it. You can see the plunger shaft assy in the opening and thats the area you want to fill with a good penetrating oil!!!! Let it sit for a couple of hours keeping it full of oil. The housing is aluminum and the shaft is likely to be a brass material so rust is not possible. Its caused by a buildup of carbon!! The penetrating oil will soften the carbon which in turn will free up the plunger!! MINE WORKS GREAT NOW and plus you will save around $140.00 if you were to buy it from the dealer!!! Or $80.00 aftermarket from RockAuto.com

SOURCE: My son just purchased a 2006 GMC Envoy and Check

Until yesterday, I have never had a serious mechanical issues with my 2006 Envoy Denali, which only has +/-60K Miles (under extended 100K Mile warranty).

Yesterday, however, while taking an interstate on-ramp (I think I hit 40 MPH tops?), my 5.3L V-8 engine shut down while in use. I immediately pulled over, as my power steering went out when the vehicle shut off, and coasted to a stop on the shoulder.

My vehicle would not restart... the dealership took a look at it this morning, and their preliminary findings are that the engine threw a rod, there's metal shavings, and some liquid (water?) in the engine.

I'm still awaiting their full estimate of the damage.

SOURCE: 1. Trouble Code #00410 "States

I have a 2000 2.2L Sonoma that I had to replace the motor in with a 99 engine and when I did the exhaust manifold was different and I could not hook up my air pump and I now have a service engine light on all the time but it runs just fine and I even think it improved my gas mileage. You might check your air pump connections or sensor. The air pump is on the front of the engine below the ac unit. I TOO have a Hanes book but also a Chilton book because 1 covers some things the other does not

Trouble code P0410 with many others

P0410 code is for secondary AIR injection system. this injects air into the exhaust system to lower emissions, its pointless and wont effect your vehicles performance. It doesn't make the car any more efficient it just "dilutes" the exhaust emissions

What does this code mean? P0410

Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0410 indicates that your secondary air injection system is not functioning properly.
Not all 2001 Chevrolet Bazers are equipped with secondary air injection. The secondary air injection system was added to vehicles that were to be sold in certain areas where the emissions laws required it, like the State Of California.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the system by commanding the secondary air blower motor to run and the air injection solenoid to open. This causes additional oxygen to enter the exhaust system. The PCM then monitors the signal from the oxygen sensors to see if the commanded air has in fact, entered the exhaust system. Code P0410 sets when the PCM has commanded the blower motor on and the solenoid open and there is little or no change in the oxygen sensor signal.

GM has had some problems with these systems and there has been a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued that addresses some of the known concers. Below is a brief description of the TSB and the issues involved.

Bulletin No.: 04-06-04-015A
Date: November 28, 2006
TECHNICAL
Subject:
LN2, L43 or L35 Engine SES/MIL Light Illuminated, AIR Pump Ingesting Water and DTC P0410 Set (Replace AIR Pump and Inlet Hose Assembly)
Models:
1999-2003 Chevrolet Blazer, S10
1999-2001 GMC Jimmy
1999-2003 GMC Sonoma
1999-2001 Oldsmobile Bravada
with Vortec 2.2L I4 or 4.3L V6 Engine (VINs 4, 5, W - RPOs LN2, L43, L35)
Condition
Some customers may comment on the SES/MIL light being illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find a DTC P0410 indicating that there is a concern in the secondary air injection system.
Cause
Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the pump.
Correction
Replace the AIR pump and install a new inlet hose and solenoid tube assembly...

The bulletin goes on and gives detailed information on how to perform the repair and the part numbers of the replacement parts needed to do so. Your local dealer can provide the parts for you and you can probably get them to print out a complete copy of the bulletin for you. It is not really hard to do if you want to do this yourself.

CEL light/code P0410, secondary air system fault.
DTC P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System

Suspect -
Relay/fuse (box B) loc 3 ,15amps
Pump $434(new) / $243 (Remanufactured) / $95 (used,Ebay)
solenoid $73
check valve $18

A new pump, or simulator!

What signals the ECU, if the seconary Air Injection system isn't working?
H20 sensors, if running rich > Xtime throw code!
The pump only runs when the engine is cold, so the air & rich fuel mix is burnt in the exhaust manifold, so there's less Emission.

Code P0410- Secondary Air Injection Malfunction

The air injection reaction system (AIR) is on all 2004+ 4.2's. There is an electric blower under the truck, tucked inside the frame rail about under the drivers seat. The blower draws it's clean air from a hose tied into the air inlet tube between the airfilter box and Throttle body, pressurizes it slightly and blows this clean air into a port in the cylinder head directly above the exhaust manifold, dead center. There is a can shaped check valve bolted to this port with the air hose clamped to it and an electrical connection. The most common failure point of this system is this check valve. Remove the hose, the electrical connection and 2 bolts and it's off. Very easy. Problem is, it's about a $125 dealer only item.:banghead: The check valve gets corroded/cruded up and doesnt seat. Let it go long enough and moisture from the exhaust can back flow into the system and destroy the $$$ electric air blower. I'd start by removing and checking the valve and check the hoses for water.
Inspect the air pump and wire harness under the Trailblazer's frame rail, since you did mentioned that your had your transmission serviced and they would have had to work under there to remove the transmission pan to replace the transmission fluid and filter. There are 2 fuses you need to check also. AIR fuse 60amp....AIR solenoid fuse 15amp.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya

Checked why engine light was on and it gave code P0410 Secondary injection system. to me this is very vague. can you help?

that code indicates a problem w/ the air injection system, a part of the emissions system. you should check the air pump, solenoid, check valves and vacuum hoses of that system. the emissions sticker under the hood should give you a detailed enough diagram of where the components are

I have an engine management light come on - tested - came up with a code PO410 - what is the next step?

P0410 is the error code for Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
The secondary air injection pump pumps air into the exhaust to help heat the catalytic converter at cold start. This lowers the emissions at an otherwise high emission time.
A malfunction means that computer has registered either a pump failure (common on some models), fuse blown, or improper catalytic converter function.
Check your fuses. Whether you find a bad fuse or not have the codes reset. Some auto Zones can read and reset the codes. If the error comes back you may want to consider having the exhaust system checked.Problems with the catalytic converter\converters can have a large impact on your MPG.

Mazda rx8 fault code p0410 secondary air system we have a mazda rx8 2006 model, p0410 fualt code has come up, want should we looking to check, test and poss change?

The P0410 code refers to the (secondary air system) emissions system. The AIR pump puts air to the exhaust to lower emissions. It takes in outside air and pumps it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.
.
About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in climates with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.

A code P0410 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the pump
  • Blown AIR pump fuse due to freezing up
Possible solution:
This may be covered under the emissions warranty on the vehicle. If your vehicle is out of bumper-to-bumper warranty, check if the emissions warranty is still valid!
  • Replace the AIR pump AND one-way check valve
  • Test and clean the AIR pump AND test and replace the one-way air check valve
  • Replace the AIR pump inlet hose
  • Replace the AIR pump fuse (found under the hood)
It is really only an emissions issue and won't harm your car's engine ot drivetrain. It will however mean you won't pass emission testing if you live somewhere that tests for that like I do!
