F-350 Supeer Cab, long-bed, dually, with towing

F-350 Super Cab, long-bed, dually, with towing package, automatic transmission, 5.4 v-8 engine, year 2000. I want to change out the rear end to get better gas mileage. Which rear end should I get and how much will it cost? Can I install it myself?

I don't know how much better gas mileage you will get with a gear change. I don't think it will be worth the cost verses saving a couple mpg. The 5.4L engine is kinda small for this size truck. The better way to go would be a cold air intake and an aftermarket exhaust this will easily give 5-10 mpg increase over stock and won't sacrafice any power when towing

It does have a towing package right? A button on the end of the gearshift that you push in when towing? It sounds like it is in too high of gear. Maybe trans fluid gets hot and turns on the light? If it dont have the towing package? Are you keeping it in overdrive? Shift it down manually and keep it in 3rd when hauling any kind of weight.
Not sure if this helps but I know peopl that have burnt their transmission out pulling trailers in O/D

I have a 2000 F350 7.3L crew cab long bed with 140k miles. Mostly highway miles and never towed anything over 3500 pounds until now and has not ever been chipped. I just towed a 23' toy hauler 5000 lbs...

Sounds like the front seal leaked some fluid. If I remember right the tranny cooler in that year is less than adequate for towing. The "puking" seems to happen when your jogging the trailer into position, shifting from drive to reverse and not moving very fast. One fix is to install the 6.0 aux cooler and another is to install an aftermarket cooler. My '94 F350 did this on a 123 degree day when I was trying to jostle my 9,000 lb fifth wheel into my friends front yard. I lost about 1/2 qt. replaced it and it hasen't leaked since..that was about 2 years ago.
