Engine miss fire

The following is a list of the more common causes in most vehicles:

-bad spark plug(s), wire(s), coilpack

-out of time engine (timing belt jumped teeth)

Not getting spark in #1 & #4 cylinder

Since both one and 4 are fired using the same coilpack if the location of the coilpack is easy to get to you can swap it with the 3/2 coil pack and see if the miss moves to 3/2 thus eliminating the ignition module and related circuits and confirming the coil is faulty

Check out the site for NHTSA complaints. I believe there was a defect in the cylinder heads for this engine. The redesigned heads have a different suffix letter than the stock heads.

For a time, the Manufactuer was paying for the repair.

Im working on a 1993 cutlass ciera 3.3L it was missing pretty bad and i changed the plugs and wires also i change the fuel filter still missing but not as bad as before i only gaped the spark plugs at 040...

That 3.3 liter buick engine uses the magnavox coilpack and they are prone to failure. They will give you a weak spark and the engine will be hard starting when it gets to be 30degrees out or colder. The spark output will dissapear when put under a larger load (steping on gas 1/2 throttle or more) causing the engine to misfire at that time. those engine always ran rough at an idle so dont take that as a definate skip. you will never get that engine to run so smoothe that it doesnt wiggle a little when just standing there looking at it. due to the lack of spark and power when it looses spark when moving and giving it 1/2 throttle or so, the transmission will jump into passing gear or 3rd to 2nd(downshift) suddenly because you are giving it the command to by giving it 1/2 throttle. fix the skip and the transmission will prabably act normally. you can usually tell if the coilpack is bad by removing 2 oposing spark plug wires and using a multimeter on the ohms scale, ohm the coil posts out and you should have aproximately 15,000ohms. if you have more than 18,000 or less than 12,000ohms you definately need to replace the coil. the car could have many diffrent problems causing what you have described but my money is on the coilpack. I worked at the G.M. dealer for 15 years and have replace MANY of them.

2002 ford ranger 3.0 is missing on 2 cyl plugs ok injectors ok new coilpack

do a compression test,as the intake manifold,like alot of fords is no good.

Since it is a horizontally opposed four cylinder engine, the spark plugs are basically installed the same way (horizontal to the ground, in line with the pistons) Two are on the left, two are on the right. The coilpacks replace the conventional spark plug wires. You will need to remove the coilpacks to access the spark plugs. You will also have to remove the intake airbox to reach the left two spark plugs, and you will have to remove the windshield washer fluid reservoir to reach the other plugs. This is very time consuming... the right tools make it much easier. Make sure you get the oem replacements, otherwise your car may not run well.
