We have a 07 Chevy Silverado with factor Onstar and discovered a loose wire under the steering column. Found lots of diy wiring and it looks like an aftermarket power door system had been installed- Valet 712T? Can anyone tell me more about this? We recently locked the keys in the truck actually keys were in the ignition. Onstar was NOT Able to remote unlock and curious if pervious owners wiring/ intall of Valet 712T maycaused this. All help appreciated

First why could not Onstar unlock car Yes if this system was installed wrong it could interfere with the lock and unlock relays if you do not have the remote remove the valet system and restore factory wiring then call onstar to see if they can control the system now.

use a test light the wire from the battery should be hot all the time the wire that goes to the solenoid should be hot when the key is turned over to start and the wire going to the coil should be hot when the key is in run.

SOURCE: 1998 Wranger Ignition Key Stuck / Steering Column Locked

I have had this same problem on 4 of my Jeeps. A locksmith provided me with two answers.
This key thing happens to me at least once a week.
It is a common problem with Jeeps. 1998 Wrangler, 2007 Cherokee and two 2000 Cherokees all had the issue.

1. Replace the tumbler assembly. $150. USD (Not!)
2. Place the key in the ignition, smartly impact the key on the **** end, end that is sticking out of the ignition. (Harder is not better) strike straight on as to not break the key off. 4 or 5 strikes should fix the problem every time.

FYI - flooding the switch with WD-40 will not fix the issue, it is a tumbler problem.

SOURCE: key locked in ignition... can't get it out. HELP!

while in park, press harder up past park and it will disengage. Otherwise there is a pin on the ignition you can press and remove the entire ignition. You call also lightly tap gently around igniton piece to loose the pins inside that hold the key.

How do I remove the whole steering column and shaft on 1989 Chevy silverado c1500 without removing the steering wheel?

Not exactly sure I understand what you are asking,, but to remove steering column there are two bolts/ nuts behind dash that hold column up they bolt into the support for the pedal assembly. Then there are I believe three bolts that bolt the column to the fire wall. The column is then bolted to the rag joint that joins the steering column to the steering box. You will also need to remove/ disconnect the wiring harness from under dash as well as any shifter linkage under hood. That linkage is simply a cotter pin or the likeness and push the rod out of the bushing.

start job under hood and work you way inside. Remove wire harness connector before the two bolts or nuts that hold column to dash. Should take about a half hour.

Cruise control on 1996 Chevy Silverado won't hold speed

Possibly a broken wire in the steering column. Wires goint through the steering column for the cruise are so fragile when the tilt is used alot causing the wires to brake. Part is $70.00 through advance auto. Cheapest I've found if you order online.

Tow haul on 2001 chevy silverado does not work

If the unit is getting the signal frim the pedal depression, it has to work. check that it's getting the signal when you depress the pedal. Check those connections, if all that is fine, the unit itself is faulty.

My 2001 chevy silverado's low beams don't work. I

The wiring for the low beams would run not to the ignition, but to the dimmer switch. I don't know what color they are, but sounds like you are at the source of the problem, if the low beams quit when the column is let down. Pull the trim pieces off the steering column and examine the wires going to the dimmer switch. You may see some wiring insulation scraped off. It could be a bad dimmer switch, but check the wiring first.
Good luck.

Chevy 2000 silverado tow haul wont work, light wont come on and the engine light stays on all the time

I had that problem yesterday and researched the web. Found out underneath the steering column, take the bottom plastic cover off, there is a orange wire for the tow/haul. It's actually 2 white wires with orange covering. It was broke.
Splice the two wires back together and it works great...

1995 CHEVY TAHOE all lights work except brake lights including the hi brake light

Try checking the fuse first. If it's ok there is a brake light switch on the steering column under the dash, or on the master cylinder under the hood. If it is on the column check that the wire isn't loose or the switch came loose. You should be able to unplug the switch and take a short peice of wire and jump it between tne connectors. There should be only two wires to it. If the lights work change the switch.

Wiring problem

Check the fusible links at the starter. One of them may be burned. You mentioned that it shuts down when you turn a corner. Check the wiring going to the ignition switch under the steering column, you may have a loose wire there as well.
