Okay I need to ask one more question do you think that my 2002 Malibu v6 3.1 liter has a problem with the fuel it is nette getting enough fuel to the engine and if it is can you suggest something to do because I think that is what it is from all the answers that I have been getting

Engine coolant temperature sensor may be bad .

check the fuel filter, it may not be getting enough fuel to engine. if that is ok! then remove and clean IAC ( idle air control ). do not put the body in any liquid. just clean the valve. do not push it in, it will mess up your idle. just clean it if need be. have a good day !!

get it scanned, likely a bad sensor causing it to inject too much or not enough fuel into the engine

fuel pump usually is very close to the gas tank or inside the gas tank.

Have you tried replacing the ignition coils? If they get old and stop working, or if they're damaged, they won't send a strong enough spark to the plugs. AutoZone (I think) apparently does free diagnostic codes for a check engine light. I don't know if you have a check engine light on or not, but maybe the light burned out? It might be worth a try to call them and ask if they can check the codes for you for free.

check your plugs and leads. do you think you may have dirty fuel?

fuel pressure, (41 to 47 psi).If the pressure is good then the pump is ok. If the pressure drops off fast after turning off the key then you have a bad pump or fuel pressure regulator. With bad mpg I would think a bad regulator. You can do a quick check on the regulator by removing the vacuum hose and looking for signs of gas in the hose. thanks.

I had a similar problem with a 2001 Saturn. We checked every fuse and they were all fine. We finally did a 'reset' on the car's computer by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it a few minutes later. Everything was back to normal after that.

You need to check your fuel pressure on the fuel rail... Did you use a used fuel pump?
