420 is a catalytic converter afficiency code. It could cause by many problems: bed fuel, old spark plugs, sensor wiring connection. I would replace plugs and fill with premium fuel, turn off the code and drive to see if it comes back. If it does, stop by any muffler shop and have them run cleaner threw your system, it may give you 5 to 6 month driving but sooner or later you will need new cat for your car. Hope it helps.

Why would you change any items?

Have you not googled the code?

420 & 430 are exhaust converter issues

You change no parts,you check for codes & component
test system faults using the codes, until you find a problem

Probably has 3 or 4 of them in the exhaust from the header down past the catalytic converter. Your check engine code should have stated which one. Anyway, an easy fix, might need special tool, check it out, Hope this helps.

How do you check and fix a EGR code on 2000 Camry? I have 02 htr, 02 snsr, comp, evap, misfire and 420 codes. Can fixing egr help clear the other codes? Replaced both 02 snrs about 4 months ago.

I have a 2001 VW golf that I just bought. It passed smog checks no problem. But now the Engine Light is "ON" and the guy at the shop told me that the code is 420. What is code 420?

Code 420 is a catalytic converter is not working properly.Check the converter for leaks and the rear oxygen sensor for leaks.If they are good then you should replace the converter and clear the code.Good luck.Good luck.

DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1

You will find a bad O2 Sensor behind the converter or a bad catalytic converter on the bank 1 side of the exhaust manifold. This is the one on the drivers side.
