I have a 2001 Saturn L200 sedan. The dash, radio, and gear shifter lights have been flikering randomly when the head lights are on. It has been doing this for about a year. It has slowly been getting worse until last week the lights (dash) would stay off up to 30 seconds before comming back on. The gear sifter lock also has been getting harder to disengage (by pressing on the brake). 2 days ago the car stalled as soon as I turned the lights on, and started or not I cannot get the gear to shift out of park. The car will only start with a jump but the battery is not dead because the dome lights still come on bright. The car will run until I turn on the headlights then it stalls and just ticks or nothing when I try to start it again.
Your battery is not charged and gets drained constantly, dome lights doesn't take much voltage to be lit. Get a voltmeter and check on the battery. Engine off it should be all charged up and 12V ish. Try to start your engine, should be 13-14v charging, if not, then it is your alternator not charging or SOMEHOW your battery doesn't receive enough charging from the alternator.
When you turn on the headlight while engine is running and died off because the alternator some how couldn't supply enough current to power both headlights and motor ignition system
Get your alternator tested, before that all connections between alternator and battery is NOT LOOSE, or broken or damaged. Then go to auto electrician. Then sort out your fuses later.

Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.
SOURCE: 2001 Saturn SC2 Electrical issue
I had the same problem in a 1997 SC2. Turns out that finicky/broken door lock/unlock switches were causing an intermittent short.
I removed the 20A fuses to these locks in the switch panel under the radio. Problem fixed.

check the wire and connection at the ignition switch

try your spare key it sounds like the transponder in the key is going bad

Start by setting your auto headlight switch to off if this solves it replace your headlight switch If your car is equipped with daytime running lights there could be a short bridging them with your auto head lights look for broken or frayed wires do this also if you have installed or had someone install an aftermarket stereo or speakers/sub woofer, amplifier. Good Luck with this
