SOURCE: Have a knocking noise in engine and white smoke

To my knowledge, all Hondas in the U.S. use timing belts.

The white smoke is indicative of a head gasket problem. Coolant is likely getting into your oil.

Don't wait too long to have this checked out. You could destroy your engine.

White smoke from exhaust and knocking noise from the engine[ toyota hiace 2L diesel 2003]

Steam is not smoke. Smoke would be from oil burning, the steam would be overheated coolant which is 50% H2O. Oil making white smoke, more than a little would have a smell that irritates the eyes and nose
while the steam from overheated coolant will smell sweet. The mixing of coolant and oil will be apparent on the oil fill cap when major damage has occurred and looks like coffee with cream.

Black smoke from exhaust

This is almost certainly a split hose - mine was the large hose coming out of the bottom of the EGR valve.

Speaking to a parts guy at my local Jaguar dealer, he said that the new part is uprated as Jaguar are aware that this is a problem.

The split allows more air in and results in the ECU changing the mixture and over fuelling - Black smoke is an indication of un-burnt Diesel. As well as the black smoke you may also notice a whistle/whine or sucking noise when you accelerate and a lack of power / lumpiness at around 2000rpm.

Hope that helps!
