I have a knocking noise and white smoke in diesel jaguar x type

it sounds like the duel mass flywheel has gone bad unless there is something fouling ie .exhaust so get the exhaust etc first cos a new flywheel/clutch is a EXPENSIVE JOB! GOOD LUCK

Let us start with the type of engine. Is it diesel or gasoline?

Steam is not smoke. Smoke would be from oil burning, the steam would be overheated coolant which is 50% H2O. Oil making white smoke, more than a little would have a smell that irritates the eyes and nose
while the steam from overheated coolant will smell sweet. The mixing of coolant and oil will be apparent on the oil fill cap when major damage has occurred and looks like coffee with cream.

TELL ME COLOR SMOKE YOU SEE, BLUE SMOKE ENGINE BURNING OIL, WHITE SMOKE FUEL INJECTION TIMING OFF OR BLOWN HEAD GASKET,BLACK SMOKE YOU HAVE RESTRICTED AIR FLOW DUE TO STOPPED UP AIR FILTER.

Diesel engines always put out black smoke, so it is probably normal.

if it is diesel i had the same problem plus poor mpg. it turned out to be the rubber pipe from the egr valve to the intercooler that was split cost at jag dealer £73.27 hope this helps. boovie

change the diesel filter it builds up rubbish from the tank

can anyone tell me where the intercooler is on a 05 plate jaguar x type 2.0 diesel thanks

This is almost certainly a split hose - mine was the large hose coming out of the bottom of the EGR valve.

Speaking to a parts guy at my local Jaguar dealer, he said that the new part is uprated as Jaguar are aware that this is a problem.

The split allows more air in and results in the ECU changing the mixture and over fuelling - Black smoke is an indication of un-burnt Diesel. As well as the black smoke you may also notice a whistle/whine or sucking noise when you accelerate and a lack of power / lumpiness at around 2000rpm.
