How to replace the 2 ignition coils on 2001 kia sportage

Can you walk me thru the steps in replacing the 2 ignition coils for my 01 kia sportage? I need to replace the plugs, wires coils and gasket and my mechanic friend has blown me off for over 6 weeks so I have to attempt this myself but have never done an ignition coil before - step by step would be helpful, thanks

The coils ar located at the top off spark plugs. It is to coils.

Remove air tunnel on top of motor. Remove plastic cover plased in center motor. Then you will see the coil and spark plugs. Commond problem is oil leak into spark plugs. It will stop the engine. new gasket around topp cover will solve the problem. did the same job today.

Your spark plugs, wires, ignition coils are located underneath a cover under your throttle body on the top center of your engine. You have to remove the throttle body to access ALL the cover bolts (NOTE that its recomended to replace throttle body Gasket/s with new ones). Once the cover is off you will see the 2 coils, each with a wire and cap extending out of them to a spark plug, each coil sits on top of a spark plug with a cap protruding out onto a spark plug. Unscrew the 2 bolts per coil, disconnect the electrical connectors from the harness to the coils, lifting straight up and twisting the coil back and forth as the plug cap may stick to the porcelain of the spark plug, do the same for the plug cap wire end.

This video is to show how to do a compression test, but it will help with dis-assembly, and shows where all parts are located. The only thing I didn't see, was removal of the center cover above the plugs, ans coils. Kia Sportage 2001 Compression Test Definitely a help for plug, and coil change on 2001 Kia Sportage.

SOURCE: i have a 2001 kia sportage. it has miss in engine

you could have a bad injector or vacuum leak near #3. or you could have leaking head gasket. or you could have a burnt valve. testing will confirm what is actually wrong, it takes diagnostic equipment to illiminate what isnt the problem

I have a 1998 kia sportage wil crank over and will not start. no spark.

Sounds like the coil or possibly the electronic ignition, replace coil as this is the cheaper option. Check to see if your Kia then starts if it does allow the engine to run until at operational tempreture then shut off the engine allow 5 mins then try to restart if your Kia if it starts again without straining or being boosted via jumper cables problem solved. If by any chance you do replace the coil & your Kia still will not start the electronic ignition is the next step & that can be done yourself as long as you have the required tools & knowledge, if not a trained professional will be able to replace the electronic ignition but this will be very costly if it is the electronic ignition.

I hope this helps.

P0302 for a kia sportage

The P0302 code means that the cylinder 2 is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks an if no leaks are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs on cylinder 2. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem, see "Possible Causes"
- Faulty spark plug 2
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector 2
- Faulty ignition coil 2
- Fuel injector 2 harness is open or shorted
- Fuel injector 2 circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition coil 2 harness is open or shorted
- Ignition coil 2 circuit poor electrical connection
- Insufficient cylinder 2 compression
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Intake air leak

more than likely your spark plugs they should be changed every 60,000km

Changed timing belt on 2001 kia sportage but still runs rough

I would check the connectors on the coil packs, spark plugs and wires and replace them if they at all seem worn or tired. My 2000 sportage ran rough so I replaced the fuel filter, coil packs, spark plugs and wires, cleaned out the IAC valve, TPS, throttle body and intake tube, tightened the screws on the fuel pump access door under the right rear seat and cleaned the ground wire and the contact surface and I added 1 ground wire from the block to the firewall and 1 from the valve cover to the firewall. Your timing is more than likely right where it needs to be but the ignition may be slightly missing from a bad coil pack, dirty or fouled plugs or a bad plug wire.

Miss fires

Its very likely that its time for a tune up, also you should check the resistance of your ignition coils and if they are not within specs replace them. This same problem happen to my Sportage. Leave feedback. Rate this post.

Kia problem

You should get the codes checked and start from there. My Kia Sportage was also backfiring and running rough, after checking the codes. It had misfires on two cylinders. I did a tune up and had to replace one of the ignition coils. Now it runs great!
