The outside handle on the passenger side door was sticking at first and you would really need to yank on it to get it to open. Then one day I opened it and it wouldnt click shut and would just bounce back open. I am wondering what could be causing the door to not stay shut and also how much it might cost. Thanks

Re: Door wont shut on 2001 VW Beetle
Very inexpensive. dont replace anything. just get WD40 and spray the latch on the inside very well. then lift the door handle up and get a screw driver and push the latch up. then press it down and repeat. keep working the latch for a whiile. it will work out

clean out the drain holes at the bottom of the door
normally 3 slots near the edge of the door
next get a sheet of clear plastic and using a good sealant adhesive stick the plastic around every opening of the inner panel of the door
That stops water splashing out of the holes against the trim and running into the car
tube of sealer , sheet of plastic and your time
You may want to check your wiring harness to that door. The harness runs along the door frame, by door hinge area and it's inside a rubber boot. Most common problem is that a few wires break due to heat and age. If wiring is broken, repair wires if possible. If not possible to repair, recommend you replace the complete harness.
If you are mechanically inclined, you will need to remove the inner door panel to access the harness. Once you have the harness removed, there is a label that identifies the part number for this harness. Good luck and hope this resolves your problem.
To remove the external door handle is not nessecery to dismount the door panel. Just follow my instruction: Open the door. Above the latch you will find small round plastic cover 1 inch of diameter.Remove it.There is screw T35 or T40 head/judish star/.Unscrew.Than slide the handle to the right about 1cm.Carefully pul out left side. That is it.
I removed all 3 switches from driver and passenger door, which is really easy with a flat head screw driver. took them completely apart, very carefully, with a small screwdriver out of a christmas cracker. put them back together again and 2 switches started working, so I put 1 in the drivers side and 1 in the passengers side so now my drivers door window opens and I lean over to open the passenger door. cool, no money spent...yet ;o)
