When driving down the road every now and then i get a noise like a high pitch whine, i hit 4h then back to 2h and it goes away, sounds like a gear trying to engage while driving
Sounds like your one of your hubs on the front axle are staying engaged when you turn off the 4wd. By reselecting the 4wd high and back to 2wd hi it is causing it to release. Get it looked at these can get expensive if damage is done.

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one
If it's not whining when you have your foot on the clutch and are stopped, its not the throwout bearing. While driving the throwout bearing isn't being used....
Transmission whine is either in the transmission or differential.
Using the shorter gear leaver in the samurai, the gear choices are arranged in a simple U fashion. They are arranged in sequence. At left top, bottom, right middle and right top you have 2 high(2H), 4 hight (4H), neutral(N) and 4 low (4L). 2H- Engages rear wheel drive only. 4H- Engages all wheels in 4X4 mode. N- Disengages all wheels (if you gonna tow your vehicle) 4L- Engages all wheels in 4X4 mode with 50% more torque but you cut your top speed by an equal amount. If you have the OEM gear knob the diagram of the layout of the transfer box should be imprinted. 2 high should be used on dry and mildly wet paved roads. Using 4L or 4H in these conditions may result in damage to your transfer box. You may use 4L or 4H in any other road conditions.
Probably the front differential, your probably hearing the famous differential gear whine. Change the oil, put Lucas for gears in it. You can get a hand operated oil pump to **** it out through the dip stick if it has one. Then fill it with the recommended amount.
This NoiseDescription sounds Indicative of the Sounds that come from the Serpentine Belt Or Related parts such as Belt Idler Pulley or Belt Tentioner witch also has a Pulley, but if Tensioner itself is Literally BROKE I've replaced a number like this it will cause a Whining noise . Best case scenario its just the Belt, and if any of the other Problems turn out to be the Culprit the Belt MUST be Replaced Anyhow as Damage is Being caused By the Very Whining you hear.

The Pulleys usually have a more Hum type Whining. So I would say at Best The BELT , And WORST Belt Tentioner is Broke
