Question about 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis
What are the functions of Resume &Coast buttons located in steering wheel
If set at a specific speed and you have to slow down by hitting the brakes, The brakes turn off the cruise control. Pressing resume automatically turns the cruise control back on and accelerates to the previous speed setting. You can also use it to accelerate and by releasing it the new speed will be set.

The coast button allows you to disable the cruise control without loosing yor setting, then you hit resume to go back to set speed. Basicaly keeping you off the brake and having to reset the speed. Example: you are doing 75 with cruise control, you are coming up on another vehicle too fast so instead of hitting the brakes you press coast to slow down. then once you back off far enough you hit resume and the car will again accelerate to 75. If you find that you are better off doing 65 then you would hit set when you have slowed down to 65 and that where the cruise control will hold it as your new setting. you are controlling, or the cruise control is controlling everything you would with your right foot. But! watching the road and braking is still your responsibility. Touching the brake will turn off the cruise control and give you back the gas pedal.

Resume is for when your cruise control automatically disengages when braking, you use this to obtain you previous speed you had your cruise control set at. Coast is like putting your car in neutral to obtain mostly slower but sometimes faster(downhill) speeds. You depress this button temporarily until desired speed is obtained.
