1991 gmc jimmy grinding noise.

I get a gear grinding noise when I go over a bump. Wheel bearing seem fine. When I accellarate I can hear it starting at higher speeds. When I slow down it goes away. It used to go away when I would shift from 2wd to 4 wheel drive, but now that doesn't work, I have so many miles that maybe ware pads in transfer case could be worn, but not sure. Some times when I turn left and right noise would go away. Noise is intermittent, like something is moving around on its own.

Doesn't always happen. I sometimes can accelorate and nothing happens. It does sound like it spins more then just the wheels turning speed. It seems to taper off and disconnect when I slow down. Can never get it to stay noisy when I am stopped. Noise did get better when shift rod nut was tightened where it connects to transmission under the vehicle. Please help.

Thougt it might be the front 4wd engagement gear, but the retracting spring was checked out and seems to be fine. Right front wheel is tilted slightly up, could it be the splines on the inside of the front right axel is rubbing on the inside of the housing? One of the front mounts where the body to the frame is mounted is shot and the body is lowered, but now thats fixed. That can affect the adjusted length of the parking or shift rod and where its attached to the transmission lever under the vehicle. The drivers side front axel is that permanently attached to the gears in the front differential?

I'm not sure exactly what the noise could be except that most likely it's in the drivetrain somewhere between the tranny, transfer case, or the rear-differential (AKA: rear-diff, rear-end or third member). None of which would be cheap to repair.

I'm pretty sure the intermittency you're experiencing is because whatever is causing the noise, is only worn & not fully gone yet, but will be soon. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to further pinpoint this noise, maybe someone else could???

It sounds like a wheel bearing is going bad. They are easy to change. If you have a place to jack the vehicle up. Try spinning the front wheels. You should hear a scraping noise as the wheel turns. Also replace both sides at the same time,as the otherside is not far behind.

Front end 95 jimmy

Sorry not sure what kinda noise your hearing but here are a few things that would cause that.
1 Check for worn ball joints. 2 Check for tire pressure. 3 Check for wheel bearing failure. 4 Check for worn brake pads and rotors. 5 Easies on is to check to see if the brake dust is rubbling.
Good luck and hope this helps

Left Wheel Makes Funny Noise...

sounds like wheel bearings or 4wd might be stuck engaged... try cycling 4wd or checking grease packing first.

Front wheel seems about to fall off

It sounds like the Bearings are out on that Wheel. You Could have caused damage to the Spindle in addition. Not a Cheap Fix by any Means. Check the Bearings and Spindle for Breakage.

I hit a bump on the right front side and it makes a roaring type noise and shimmies a bit .. can feel it under my left foot. also at times it will make that soud when i make a right hand turn... it is ...

Sounds like your left front wheel bearing is going bad. When you make a right turn, or compress the right front suspension over a bump, it forces the car to roll to the left. This loads the suspension on the left side, which will exaggerate a wheel bearing problem. Are you hearing the noise at all when travelling on the highway in a straight line? If so, it'd be either a grinding sound or a hollow humming noise. If you aren't, it may be that the bearing is just starting to go bad.

A quick test to see if the bearing is bad is to jack the car up at that corner, grab the wheel at the top and bottom, and shake it hard - if there is any movement or looseness, your bearing is shot. If there is none, it doesn't mean the bearing is fine, but it could be that it's just starting to go bad (which would be why you only hear it in turns and bumps, but not straight-line yet).
