Crankshaft match marks

Align marks on timing belt pulley and pump body.

Camshaft pulley alignment marks

Align marks on camshaft pulleys with alignment marks on seal plate.
Install timing belt. NOTE: No looseness should exist on the tension side and at the camshaft pulleys.
Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.

Timing Belt Installation

Install lower timing belt cover.
Install upper timing belt cover.
Install power steering drive belt and adjust belt tension.
Install fan pulley.
Install generator drive belt and adjust belt tension.
Install A/C drive belt and adjust belt tension.
Install splash guard.
Install fan and fan shroud.
Install 4 fan bolts. Tighten to 24 ft lb (33 Nm).
Install fan shroud mounting bolts.
Install fresh air duct.
Connect hose to resonance chamber.
Connect battery negative cable.

there should be a mark on the crankshaft pulley there should be a mark on the camshaft pulley and they should line up but to be sure bring the motor to tdc then line your mark up on your camshaft

broken belts on these engine can cause engine damage...the are 2 belts on the ohc engine,
align the timing mark on the bell housing with the centre of the 3 marks on flywheel ( no numbers etc) the others are ign timing marks..each camshaft sprocket has a mark on it and on the cover above it make sure these align also.

Did you make sure the belt was installed with the timing marks lined up properly? If you forgot to look at the timing marks it will not start and you may damage the engine trying to start it.

Why is the engine not starting

If the belt broke, and you put a new belt on with everything in the same position, most likely the belt is not correctly installed. The
cam position and crankshaft must be in a exact position, with
marks on both to match a similar mark on the non moving part of the engine. If your engine is an "interference" engine you are
in big trouble with a broken timing belt because valves are bent
not closing and other problems. I hope this is not the case.
Goggle your make year model and timing marks You should be able to find pictures that will show the marks that must line up.
I had a belt off by just one cog and had your problem. Double
check to be sure you have the right timing belt from your supplier. There is a chance someone mixed things up. Do you have spark?

Need to know timing marks

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Loosen power steering lock bolts and nuts accordingly and remove tension from power steering (P/S) and/or air conditioning (A/C) compressor drive belt.
3. Remove P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
4. Loosen generator mounting bolts and adjusting bolt.
5. Remove generator bolts.
6. Remove water pump pulley.
7. Remove crankshaft pulley.
8. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
9. Turn crankshaft so that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate.
Do not move camshaft or crankshaft once timing marks have been correctly positioned.
11. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt.
12. Protect timing belt with a rag.
13. Remove tensioner pulley.
14. Remove timing belt. Mark the direction of timing belt rotation (on the timing belt) for proper reinstallation.

INSTALLATION
1. Install tensioner pulley. Replace tensioner spring whenever timing belt is replaced.
2. Pull tensioner pulley to its furthest point and tighten lock bolt.
3. Check that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
4. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate.
If existing timing belt is being reused, install belt in proper rotation direction marked prior to removal.
5. Install timing belt onto timing belt pulley first, then idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley, and tensioner pulley in that order.
6. Check that there is no looseness in belt between idler pulley and exhaust camshaft pulley or between intake and exhaust camshaft pulleys.
7. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt and allow tensioner spring to apply tension to timing belt.
Do not add additional tension.
8. Tighten tensioner pulley lock bolt to specified torque.
Tightening torque:28~38 lb-ft (38~51 N·m, 3.9~5.2 kg-m)
9. Rotate crankshaft two full revolutions (clockwise only) and align timing mark on timing belt pulley with timing mark on engine block.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned with marks on seal plate.
11. If they are not aligned, remove timing belt and start process from tensioner installation.
12. Measure timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure midway between camshaft pulleys. If deflection is not correct, repeat from tensioner installation.
Deflection pressure:22 Ib. (98 N, 10 kg)Deflection:0.39~0.50 in. (11~13 mm)
13. Install lower and upper timing belt covers in that order.
Tightening torque:5.8~8.0 Ib-ft (7.9~10.7 N·m, 0.8~1.1 kg-m)
14. Install timing belt guide plate and crankshaft pulley.
Tightening torque:9.0~12.6 lb-ft (12.3~17.2 N·m, 1.3~1.8 kg-m)
15. Install water pump pulley.
Tightening torque:9.0~12.6 lb-ft (12.3~17.2 N·m, 1.3~1.8 kg-m)
16. Install generator belt and adjust the tension.
17. Install P/S and/or A/C drive belt and adjust the tension.
18. Connect negative battery cable.

INSPECTION
Never forcefully twist, turn inside out or bend timing belt. Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with timing belt.
1. Replace timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or grease.
2. Check timing belt for uneven wear, fraying, peeling, cracking and hardening. Replace timing belt as necessary.
3. Bend timing belt into a "U" shape as shown in figure. Distance "A" must be at least 1.0 in (25 mm).
4. Inspect both idler pulley and tensioner pulley for uneven wear and smooth bearing operation.
5. Inspect camshaft pulleys and timing belt pulley for broken teeth or damage.
Replace any component that shows damage, excessive wear, or that appears prone to a possible failure.

Timing mark for timing belt

Best to go into a Mitsi dealer and take a photocopy of the timing belt replacement instructions. I would be very concerned that there may be internal engine damage if the cambelt has broken, such as bent valves or piston damage. It's highly unlikely that the cam will stop in the right position with all the valves almost closed when the belt breaks, but I have heard of it from time to time.

I have replaced broken timing belt on 1999 daewoo nubira and all timing marks line up but it will not idle properly and knocks

did the timing belt snapbefore you replaced it? if so you may have bent some valves. if not recheck timing marks and distributor position.

No it will NOT bend valves on this particular engine, if it goes out of time. I would replace BOTH the timing belt and the drive belt at the same time, since both are very inexpensive, even from the Ford dealer. Line up both timing marks on both the cam and crank sprockets in the 12 o'clock position. The marks are very easy to see, once you remove the timing belt cover. Hope this helps.
