SOURCE: whining noise after water pump installation

If it's a 2.2 there is a special tool that holds chain while servicing the H2O pump.If you didn't have it the chain slipped & is now too tight causing the whine. You will need to take everthing apart.I woulr recommend replacing the chain & all guides(kit) Hope this helps

Timing chain noise

The chain, gear teeth or possibly a tensioner could be going bad (worn teeth or tensioner, stretched chain).. you need to replace whatever before the timing slips and valves are bent/broken.

What would make noise behind timing chain cover on 2001 kia

IF this noise is a shrill sqeauling noise, their is a good chance it will be the timing chain tensioner pulley/adjuster. These are an inxpensive item and should be replaced each time the timing chain is changed. It is very advisable to get this checked asap, because if the tensioner and chain fail, it will lead to a complete engine failure, wich will be very costly. Being a 2001 model, it may have quiet a few kilometers on it, on the tensioner could be original. Replace these components first, regardless. If noise persists their maybe wear in the valve train.
