98 ford explorer 4.0 having this problem for awhile. In the past was abel to get it runnung by spraying the throutle body with carb cleaner to clean it out and starter fluid started right up would run fine for a couple of months, now that is not working so we relaced the fuel filter and cleaned out the fuel filter it is getting fuel to a point. I can spray starter fluid and it turns over but then dies fues seem ok. What else could I try?

What about the fuel filter????? Have you changed it out??? If you can spary something like a started fluid, that means it is a fuel problem. My last check, it has to be above 50-psi on the fuel pressure to make it run right. I had 35psi, but whould not get over 30mph or down hill maybe 45mph. Check both filter & pressure, but check pressure with a New fule filter!!!!

Turn key forward listen for the fuel pump to pressurize if you don't here anything then your fuel pump needs replaced and it's in the tank.
SOURCE: sprayed too much carb cleaner in throttle body and
If it is a matter of flooding the engine with carb cleaner I'd be patient and let a day or two pass and allow the carb cleaner to evapoate off. Yes some will pass thru the rings in to the oil (change your oil soon w/filter)
Other then that I would not expect issues if this indeed the case. To help the process you may want to turn the engine with the gas pedal fully depressed; in doing so this justs off the fuel injection allowing the engine to breath a bit witout getting a spray of fuel. If the engine does start while doing this be certain to remove your foot from the gas pedal so not to over rev. the engine. Be aware even with starting fluid if the engine is trully flooded (with no mater what) she will not start.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

When you turn the key to the on position can you hear the fuel pump turn on? If not, the fuel pump relay has gone bad. Make sure you have at least 5 gallons of fuel in the tank. Check and make sure you have fuel flow to the rail, try cracking the banjo bolt on the fuel rail.
Testimonial: "Thank you. I believe you are on the right track. I failed to mention earlier that this is a EFI model."
