My car started driving and idling rough, and I decided to take it in to a mechanic to get it looked at. The diagnostics test brought up a few problems, including a bad Ignition Module and Ignition Coil. I replaced both of those, and it was a little smoother but was still riding and idling a little rough The diagnostics also brought up a bad MAP sensor, which I caught on a code reader I am borrowing. I replaced the sensor and noticed a little coughing from the engine. I checked the code reader, and the MAP Sensor code was gone, but a Random Misfire code popped up. I put the old Sensor in and after a test drive, the reader showed a faulty MAP Sensor again, but no misfire. The Diagnostics also had a bad O2 sensor, but they said that shouldn't cause any major problems, and that code only pops up intermittently on my reader, usually after longer drives.
HI BRANDON -sorry i took so long to respond -i will try to get to the point-i used to have similar problem with my 98 olds regency the mechanic was same person that repaired all the cars from where my car was bought- that's to say try to find a mechanic that understands that just because the 98 old gives a code error that is not always what the problem is no bs, for instance my 98 olds will give error messages all because the battery a 12 volt didn't carry ENOUGH amps ie in order to run the electrical part of the car as well as the computer so that it doesn't give an error message, iridian spark plugs & equivalent plug wires are best for this car since the engine generates alot of heat when this happened to my car the error referred to replacing the ignition module pack ,the pack was replaced and the problem remained until the plugs and wires were replaced-with what ever is going on with olds your you have probably spent close to a grand if not more, you don't have go that route-in addition after the computer gives an error and repairs are done the mechanic must resett it in order for the error message to go away- bottom line for the 5 years that i have owned this car the cost of the major repairs on the car have been 600.00 maybe less.i can explain a lot more to you if you want to meet up- since i'm not auto repair smart i can show on my car better than i can tell you- i live in St. petersburg leave a message if you want to meet up & have not resolved these problems.
My bet is on a bad Oxygen sensor for the random misfire. Don't forget there are upstream and downstream Oxygen sensors. Check the Rock Auto site for prices. It looks like you can replace both for about $60.

Hi there
sounds like you done allot to this car. did you clean your gas tank? Reason i say this there are times you get bad gas that water with it. and it sounds like you got water in your tank. need to get it out. Try this get some rubbing alcohol and poor it in your tank. It won't hurt it. It will soak up the water that's in your tank. try this and let me know how it goes.
Thank you for writing to fix ya.
Best Regards Richard

SOURCE: Misfire in two cylinders
Check to see if the two cylinders misfiring are on the same coil pack. If so, change the coil pack in question.
This happened to me on 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine.
Also, check for a blown head gasket with compression test.
