it sounds like you have bad synchronizes the only thing you can do is live with it or rebuild it and i will tell you you will have the cat by the tail unless you no some one who knows how hope this helps good luck
its a possibility that the transfer case might be going out or the fluids in it are bad sometimes after alot of mileage the tranfer case will slip or stick
