Nissan terrano turbo diesel 1998 has lost it's power why

i have got 2.7 turbo thats lost power ive changed fuel filter but when you put your foot down it blowing heaps of smoke ??

Could be the switch on the steering column. I've had that a few time when working on a cars at work (GM), the switch went, sometimes part of it work, other times none of it worked. Otherwise if it's two motors, it has to be something else as two motors don't just stop working at the same time (lucky chance).

Did you follow these procedures?

1. Release the fuel pressure from the fuel line as follows:
   
   1. Remove the fuel pump fuse at the fuse box.
      
   2. Start the engine.
      
   3. After the engine stalls, crank the engine two or three times to make sure that the fuel pressure is released.
      
   4. Turn the ignition switch OFF and reinstall the fuel pump fuse.
      
2. Loosen the hose clamps at the fuel inlet and outlet lines. Wrap a shop towel or absorbent rag around the filter, then slide each line off the filter nipples.
   
3. Remove the fuel filter and old hose clamps.
   

To install:

1. Place new hose clamps on the fuel inlet and outlet lines.
   
2. Connect the fuel filter, being careful to observe the correct direction of flow, then tighten the hose clamps.
   
3. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
   

Always use a high pressure-type fuel filter assembly. Do not use a synthetic resinous fuel filter
