Autozone, carquest ect. sell MAF sensor cleaner. Do not touch the sensor because it will most likely break. Pull the throttle body off and spray it down with the MAF cleaner. Brake cleaner is supposed to work but cannot verify that in all vehicles and sometimes carb clean will work depending on the vehicle.

SOURCE: 96 jimmy shuts off while running and will turn

1997 gmc jimmy normally starts and runs fine. Occasionally it wont start though. If I wait about 1/2 hour it will start. It spins nicely, but wont 'catch'. yesterday it would not start, and I have been unable to get it to start. the heat of the day or coldness of the night seem to have no effect. I am thinking that the fuel pump may be bad (150,000 miles), but not sure. Any ideas?

You never replace anything, on a Wishing,Hoping,Pushing,Poking, diagnostic approach

You learn the vehicles Systems,Test, then Replace,if you have a failed component.

Work on the Misfire Issues.
Then you lean O2 Codes will go away.

Not a the plugs.

Think lean---Vacuum leaks,EGR Valve leak,EVAP System leaks, anything with a hose that lets air into the intake system.
Exhaust System leaks,near sensors

SOURCE: 97 sierra fast rough idle, no power, severe knocking

Ok it seems to me like you may have to do some electrical checks, perhaps some voltage checks/drops in order to find out. For the P0118 you could use your scanner provided it can read live data. Look at the coolant temp snsr (cts or ect) and read its value it should read close to intake air temp snsr (IAT) value. The unplug the sensor value should change drastically and go negative. The jump the Two terminals and temperature should go high. If it does you've you've eliminated the circuit and the sensor it faulty. Make sure you have 5v reference as I said before you may have to voltage drop the circuit to make sure you're not loosing any voltage and that the circuit is intact. Good luck! Here are some links with more info and possible causes. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0118 http://www.obd-codes.com/p0507

Ford focus stoping at idling every time what problem

Restricted air flow. Replace the air filter if dirty. Clean the throttle body and MAF sensor. I use brake clean. Use a tooth brush on the throttle body , just spray down the MAF sensor. Leave the MAF off, start the car and spray some in the throttle as you rev it up. If the engine light comes on, it is because of the MAF being off. It will go out in a day or two. Or you can have it cleared.

Hesitation is random and only under harder acceleration changed plugs 1 month ago and this problem went away , but has now returned,

It could be a dirty (MAF) Mass Airflow Sensor or a dirty Throttle Body, Get some MAF cleaner at your local auto parts store and take apart the plastic ducting that attaches to the Throttle Body and use the cleaner on the inside of the Throttle Body and MAF sensor. Cleaning this takes off the carbon build-up and dirt which affects throttle response.

I have a light on the dash as a lightning bolt....my owners manual indicates electronic throttle control. I this the same as the throttle position sensor?

No
(ETC) Throttle Control---is the motor, in the Throttle Body, the TPS Sensor,is a replaceable item in it also.

The entire throttle body, is some very serious money,so don't assume it is bad.

Clean the Throttle with CRC Throttle Body Cleaner
Clean the MAF Sensor with CRC MAF Cleaner
Check for vacuum leaks
Make sure you got NO Ignition misfires.they can spike the computer and come back on the TPS, and then give you the ETC issues. (Very Technical stuff) Don't throw parts at it.

When my vehicle is running and I stop at the light or if i'm parked with the vehicle running, the engine seems like its about to shut off. what oculd this be?

About 12 things

Clean the Throttle Body with --CRC Throttle Body Cleaner
Clean MAF Sensor with -CRC MAF Cleaner
Need a fairly clean Air Filter
No Vacuum Leaks --anywhere ( including ducting-- filter to throttle)
Common sense--Spark Plugs,every three years,not more than 50,000 miles
--Gas Filter,every three years,30,000 miles
Check --for loose O2 Sensors (Vacuum Leaks)
Check--TPS Sensor,at idle

OK My 03 2500, Silverado pulls a code: PO 101, Mass Air flow circuit out of range, what do I change to fix it?

The MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) is located in in the air induction system usually just after the air filter and before the throttle body, and the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses the signal generated from the MAF sensor to determine how much fuel the engine receives. However, before you replace the MAF sensor you should be certain that there are no air or vacuum leaks in the air induction system especially between the throttle body and the MAF sensor, and also that all of the hose clamps are all good and tight on the air induction boot especially between the throttle body and the MAF sensor, and check if the air flow is being restricted from the air cleaner side of the MAF. (check the air filter and check the air intake to the air cleaner for any obstructions that might be restricting the air flow to the MAF)

You can also clean the MAF sensor with carburetor spray because they build up a very fine dust on the air velocity sensors that are mounted on wires that are suspended in the air stream to monitor and determine the amount of air flow into the engine, and when the MAF sensor becomes dirty the MAF sensor will loose performance. Be very careful when cleaning the air velocity sensors inside of the MAF sensor because they are very delicte and are easily damaged, and do not touch them with anything other than the spray from the carburetor can and that is all that is necessary to clean the air velocity sensors. Here are some images that I have put together to assist you.

I have a 2001 ford f150 5.4 v8 the rpms jump around from 400 to 800 when i start up and let it idle. I took the air intake off completely and started it back up and it ran fine. would the sensors be the...

When you ran it without the intake on, did you get a Check Engine Light ? You removed the MAFS ( Mass Air Flow Sensor ) which tells the truck how much air is flowing into the throttle body ( for Air / Fuel ratio with pulse width on the injectors ). This is in the body of the air filter element
d957772.jpg
You can clean this with MAFS safe spray cleaner ( not all throttle body cleaners are MAFS safe, it will say on the can if it is. If it does not say MAFS safe, it is not.

The other is the IAT ( Incoming Air Temperature ) sensor. This indicates the air temperature, so coupled with the Air Flow, this gives the density of the air, to make a correct A/F ratio adjustment.

This is the one after the air filter and the MAFS, before the throttle body.
You can clean this as well, it is a bulb sensor, be careful with cleaning it.

If the RPM are jumping around at idle, this would be a function of the IAC ( Idle Air Control ) on the back of the throttle body. When the butterfly is closed, this is what lets air in.
It is under the plastic throttle body cover, held on to the back of the throttle body with 2 8mm ( 9mm ? ) bolts.
6d1b588.jpg

This could be gummed up, and slow to open, so the truck opens it too much, causing the rev up, and then closes it too much to make up for it.
It is a motor operating a piston to let air into the back of the throttle body.
Removing this and cleaning it with throttle body cleaner might be a good idea. Also check the vac line to the back of the throttle body for cracks, the rubber 90* elbow is prone to cracking over time.

I have a 97 Blazer, just had the fuel pump replaced and worked fine. But in the cold weather it won't start. Any tips?

Try energizing the fuel line twice, turn the ignition key to the on position for 30 seconds then turning it off for 5 seconds and then try starting the engine. This will warm up and clean the MAF sensor, and also ressurize the fuel line if the fuel pressure check valve has failed and that is located on the fuel pump return line. Clean the MAF sensor will also help in the cod weather starts, so you may want to clean the MAF with MAF cleaner and clean the Throttle body with throttle body cleaner and pay attention to the Idle Air control valve passage ways at the back of the throttle body opening. Good luck and keep me posted.

When i press accelerator engine is cutting ....

The van may just need a good tune up.

  • Replace the fuel filter
  • Replace the air filter
  • Replace the PVC valve
  • Replace Engine oil and filter
  • Replace the Spark plugs
  • Clean out the Throttle body with throttle body cleaner
  • Clean out the MAF sensor
This should help you get your van running 100% soon. If your on a tight budget, start with Cleaning the throttle body with spraying throttle body cleaner into the throttle body and cleaning up the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner, just follow the instruction on the can. Then replace the PVC valve and add fuel injector cleaner in to the gas tank. This should help your engine running better and then you can do the rest of the work to complete the tune up. Good luck and keep me posted. If you go to Auto Zone, you can get all the things you need and they can scan your van for any DTC codes that may also indicate what issues your engine has.
