TURN IGNITION SWITCH OFF.MAKE SURE RADIO IS OFF SO YOU WONT LOSE CODE.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.WAIT AT LEAST 10 MINUTES BEFORE REMOVING AIR BAG.LET THE AIR BAG BATTERY BACK UP POWER. DISCHARGE.BECAREFUL HANDLING AIR BAG. DONT CARRY IT BY IT WIRES.WHEN CARRYING IT.HOLD IN BOTH HANDS SECURLY.WHEN LAYING IT DOWN .BESURE THE BAG AND TRIM COVER FACING UP.BESURE TO KEEP KIDS AND PETS AWAY. BECAUSE AIR BAG CAN STILL BE DEPLOYED.SO BE CAREFUL.

You need to have the system checked for what the fault code is...are you sure it's the drivers side air bag or the drivers side, side air bag(located in the seat back?)They're could be a problem with the wiring under the seat.

How do you take the sterring wheel off of a 98 vw bettle and disarm the airbags
If you want to disarm the air bag you should be able to unplug the harness or remove the relay without taking the steering wheel off.

The airbag light came on a few months ago on my 2003 VW New Bettle. What could cause this?
Go to auto parts store and have them hook up scanner and turn off the air bag light. If they can't you have to find mechanic that has scanner to mturn it off. Then see if it comes back on later.
