The transmission shifts erratically, or not at all.

SOURCE: Transmission Speed Sensor Inconsistency

Check the 10 wire connector going into the transmission for water or corrosion. This could cause inadvertant shifting but would also probably set the check engine light. The throttle position sensor could also cause this. Speed sensors screw into the transmission from the outside and would cause a limp in condition where it wouldn't shift out of second gear.

Have you changed your transmission fluid? I am assuming that it is automatic.Could be low on transmission fluid. Could also be filters in you tranny stopped up with slug/ gear shivers.Could also be band
in transmission needs adjusting.

Did you check the transmission fluid level? If necessary, add fluid. However you probably have a more serious problem. Take the car to a qualified transmission mechanic.

My 2000 hyundai elantra is automatic it has a code p0734. which the mechanic explained me that i have to get the speen sensor replace and get new clutch because the 4 gear ratio is bad. pls advice what 2...

P0734=A/T 4th gear incorrect ratio. This has nothing to do with the speed sensor. If the speed sensor was faulty, it would also set OTHER gear incorrect ratio codes. My experience tells me the 4th gear incorrect ration indicates the torque converter clutch (TCC) is slipping and nothing more. Unless there was a speed sensor DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code), the sensor is not the issue (yet). The fact P0734 was set (trust the computer), the TCC is slipping (out of range). Question: Maintenance history may indicate the wrong transmission fluid may have been introduced. Hyundai's Transmission fluid is strictly SPIII... there is no substitute. The incorrect fluid will cause 4th gear slippage. Now, having said that, it doesn't mean the 4th gear (lock-up) clutch isn't worn out. Have a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose this issue.

Where are the input and output speed sensor relays located in the transmission?

There are no relays in a speed sensor circuit. If you are talking about the relay itself, the output speed sensor is going to be in the extension housing of the transmission, and it probably doesn't have an input speed sensor, since it uses the crankshaft speed sensor as an input speed sensor.

My 2000 Hyundai Elantra is stalling intermintantly as I slow down at stop signs/lights, etc. I have noticed that the speedometer is not working properly.....i.e. when I'm moving at 30 mph the speedo is...

According to the Hyundai service website, "If there is an open or short circuit in the vehicle speed sensor signal circuit, the engine may stall when the vehicle is decelerated to a stop." This sounds like what you're describing, so you should check out the detailed troubleshooting info for the VSS at www.hmaservice.com, available free with registration.

The transmission does have a separate computer (TCM), it's a $700 plus item from the dealer, but if necessary you can get one for much less from a salvage yard. The same goes for the ECM.

I need to know where thermostat goes in my 2000 tibron?

You should be able to follow one of the large lines from the radiator to the thermostat housing. The housing is on the drivers side of the block. One of the large hoses from the radiator goes directly into the thermostat housing.

Be sure not to damage the wires to the collant temperature sensor when removing the thermostat housing.

Describe your is there a sensor on a 2000 Hyundai elantra automatic transmission Problem

YES!... There are many sensors on an automatic transmission which could pose a problem -- depending on what the problem actually is. For example, there are 'input' and 'output' speed sensors, there is a fluid temperature sensor, there is a vehicle speed sensor, and there are several solenoid valves located inside the transmission connected to the valve body. Each and every one of these items can be a problem -- again -- depends on what the problem ACTUALLY is. Agreed?

The output speed sensor is located on top of the transmission output shaft, this will send speed value to the transmission control module (TCM).
The vehicle speed sensor is installed on the differential of the transmission, and sends speed value to speed gauge on instrument cluster.

Check also IAC valve and look for vacuum leaks using an hand tool gauge(Vacuum Gauge and Fuel Pump Pressure).

Automatic transmission not shifting smoothly

For the 2000 elantra I checked the Autozone website, don't know if you have one near where you live. However, what happens a lot of times is the speed sensors go out on the transmissions. If it is not funcioning properly the transmission can't funtion properly either. They listed an input sensor and an output sensor so I can't be 100% if you indeed have both and if you do which one might be bad. You may want to have those checked first and go from there. I have had several vehicles that I was almost certain the entire transmission was going to be bad and it ended up just being the transmission speed sensor. Hope this helps.....
