97 landrover discovery runs good untill engine warms up, then it starts sputtering will only go about 20 mph.WHATS THE PROBLEM? I just bought it.It run good when i test drove it. I guess i didn't drive it far enough.
It is hard to tell: it can be misfiring, injection, electrical, fuel delivery... problems. So, your 97 LR Discovery I series is 12 years old now (2009)! Get an OBD II scanner (Equus, Actron... are cheap and available in my auto parts stores including Autozone, Napa, Sears... or Amazon.com) and scan your car or have a OBDII diagnosis done at any repair shop, first. I am sure they might be some malfunction error codes stored your your car's "blackbox" pertinent to different systems of your truck (injection, emission, air intake..) that might reveil the real problems. After that diagnosis report is out, we will start to narrow the problems and eventually suggest some solutions. I hope you know that LR Discovery manual suggests the use of Premium gas!Problem?

Check the catalytic converters. Pull the O2 sensor between the engine an cat. If it runs. Replace the catalytic converter/s. Fuel filters can clog up, but they give signs as struggling to keep up at higher speeds. Has pressure, just no volume. The will go forever, say at 55 MPH, but try doing 60 MPH and the engine cuts out or stalls a bit.
Don't run premium fuel (lights harder) Light weight oil like 5- 20 synthetic helps some, however,an engine heater would be best, simple to install, keeps everything warm, heater gets hot in seconds, engine life is prolonged.
The ignition system is controlled by the ECM. Check power at fuse box in on right side under dash. Check fuses right side engine compartmentlower dash panel if all OK check power to ECM located right side "A" pillar in alloy box. this unit could be faulty if no spark at coils, assuming they have been connected correctly. may have to get tested for codes at L/R dealer or someone with test tool. Another source of problem may well be flat battery in transponder key. The indicator light on the dash willflash rapidly for 10 seconds if the vehicle has been unlocked with the remote and the drivers door is opened if the battery in remote is getting low
This usually is the starter, especially if your truck has had an oil leak going for a while as the oil will run down into the starter and cause it to intermittenly fail. Also check your battery terminals and make sure you have a good connectivity.
Having a similar problem with my Disco. Talked to a couple guys I know who done a lot of work on them and you might check the O2 sensors and/or the spark plugs. My Disco kinda pulses during acceleration especially when you first crank up. When it warms up is smooths out. If that is what you mean by running rough. If your more chugging like the car just doesn't got it, it more likely a fuel flow issue.
Last thing cause it would be the most expensive. Your computer could be crapping out. The Disco doesn't have a mechanical distibutor. It is all done by computer and that could going.
Hope this gets you started.
Make sure there is voltage going to the fuel solenoid on the pump, i did the same with my landrover and it just would not start or would start and just cut out, turned out to be the wire going to the fuel solenoid was not working, just re-wired from a wire behind the dash board that supplied enough voltage, that when the landrover had started the wire then supplying voltage.
Just check by putting a multimeter on the fuel solenoid wire and turn the engine over if the voltage drops to below 12v then it`s most likely the same problem i had.
Problem?
