V notch on fly wheel - 2004 Kia Spectra

There are teeth on the fly wheel and you may have broken one or more teeth. You may have to replace the fly wheel. When you turn the fly wheel by hand you make the good teeth so the starter will work.

there is a lever attached to a shoe that activates on the notched wheel of the adjuster bar. The same notched wheel that is used to adjust the brakes through the back or drum. When the shoes moves from the braking action the spring pulls the lever and turns the notched wheel. this is repeated every time the brakes are applied until there is a position where the lever cannot get into the next notch.Any drum brake set up with automatic brake adjustment will look the same so any chev manual will show how to put it together.

if flywheel is fitted in correct position the timing mark on the front top cambelt gear is at 12 O clock and with starter motor removed you will see 3 lines stamped in the interuptor ring that is bolted to the rear of the flywheel if manual on early builds, also there is a notch in flywheel which you can see if gearbox is out this goes at 6 O clock

the fly wheel is located at the back of the engine block. You will have to drop the transmission to fix it. The hardest part of this job is dropping the transmission. the fly wheel is held on by 8 bolts. bery simple. If your b/f is not a mechanic, he can get a book called the Chiltons manual for that car. It will give him step by step instructions on how to replace it, and what tools are needed.

With a timing light using the diamond notch on the fly wheel which is 6*BTDC.

No . frist your fly wheel is beteen the motor and tran.you have a beanen gone on one of your pully

if its a 4JX1 diesel, yes it goes in 1 spot yet it can be bolted up in every location
put crank pulley timing mark to TDC can also check by removing cam belt top cover and check timing mark aligned up with mark at 12 O clock then flywheel has small notch in edge that must go at 6 O clock (facing down) look closely it is hard to see due to flywheel sunk into back of block.

with no1 at TDC mark is on balancer and can take off top cam belt cover to check that cam gear is timmed on mark at 12 O clock there is notch in edge of flywheel that should be put at 6 O clock (facing down) it is hard to see with flywheel on engine look closely

You more than likely need a new fly wheel, your fly wheel and starter are probably not making contact
