If the speedometer stops working the odometer stops also. Sounds like it is stuck in first gear. The RPM went up because the throttle was response to pedal but transmission not response. Check transmission fluid color. Whip off dipstick on a white paper towel look for gray if see any that is metal shavings and transmission is bad.
If I had a 1998 car with 218K miles on it and an unimportant thing like the trip meter didn't work I would put a piece of black tape over it and use a GPS as my trip meter.
normal ,if you disconnect the battery it will lose all the readings as no battery is used on the back of the dash unit .Now if your losing readings without disconnectiing the battery then you may need a new speedo head ,expensive just ignore it who needs to know what the trip meter read anyway
Were you able to fix your problem? I'm having the same issue with my car, where the Odometer intermittently jumps from 0-48. At times when I start driving the engine stalls and the Odometer starts to act up. The Egine Light is always on. I would appreciate any help.
