Determine what cylinder is misfiring and do a compression test on that cylinder. Compare it with a cylinder that is not misfiring. You should have no more than 20% difference between the good cylinder and the bad cylinder. If it is low on compression, suspect a burn valve or bad valve seat... and it will require cylinder head repair. If it is good on compression, then look for a faulty injector or some other reason for the misfire on the dead cylinder.
If this has the coil over the spark plug try replacing the coil. If it still has wires replace the cap, rotor and wires. Do a compression test and check for a mechanical problem like a burnt valve.
Sounds familiar. If the engine oil is too full, oil will splash into the spark plug openings. Then, condensation will sit on the oil shorting the plugs. Be sure not to overfill. Also, the valve cover gasket has an inside seal. Once again, oil will partly fill the spark plug hole if the gasket is bad. There is a large hole in back of the valve cover leading right to the plugs. Be careful not to rinse the engine. Gaskets seal the plugs but water can sit on the plug openings.
You can have your mechanic pull the valve cover. Loosen the bolts that hold the cam(s) in place and do a compression test. If one or more cylinders is low on compression the motor is junk. If the compression test is fine reinstall the cam and replace the timing belt and you should be good to go.
Could be bent valves. Was the motor running then stoped? Broken timeing belt? You need to remove the top timeing cover unless yu can see the camshaft through the the oil filler cap. have someone crank motor & you see if cam turns. If not = broken belt & may have bent all your valves. You can also do a cylinder leakage test to see where the compression is being lost (inlet, exhaust, rings, headgasket)
if the center 2 cylinders have only 10-15lbs pressure then you need to do a wet compression test to see if it is valves or piston rings that are bad.put about tablespoon of oil into each cylinder and turn over motor and redo the compression test.if the compression goes up you have a ring problem if it doesn`t it is a valve problem.you should check the oil to see if it has a white-caramel look to it as this indicates water in the oil.(head gasket) if the coolant level is low it can be burning coolant,you should have the cooling pressure tested just in case.it could possibly be a cracked head.if it overheats because of the low compression(sometimes happens) the motor is working twice as hard(runs hotter) as the other good cylinders have to work harder to do the same amount of work,
I would check compression as well A low compression will also cause a misfire.I have seen where a valve was closing perfect for a couple of days then not so good for a couple of days and so on . so do cyl leakage test. and good luck
