You can buy a tube of powdered graphite at a hardware or auto store. Spray a little in the key hole. It makes a good lubricant for keys. Don't use oil though, it will stick up the key worse. Hope this helps.

Try pushing your shifter all the way forward while trying to turning the key to the off position and pulling the key out. You will most likely have to buy a new shifter lever or the whole shifter assembly.

SOURCE: 1998 nissan altima gxe -ignition problem

Hi what is happening is that your turn off your car and left the wheels turned to one side and specially if your car is parke in a hill what you have to do is to force the steering wheel to the same direction of your wheels this will free up the ignition switch it is going to be hard let me tell you but it will work and this is why your shift don't work once you have the ignition switch free then your shift will work again

SOURCE: 2006 Nissan X Trail Gear Shift Stuck in Park.

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

e024280.jpg
pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

SOURCE: gear shift stuck

I am having the same problem with my 05 Altima. For a temporary rememdy we took stuck a key down into the release hole in front of the gear shift. There may be a little cover over the hole, but if you take it off and stick something in it, it will release the shifter.

Can shift without applying brakes

There should be a cable that goes from the key lock to the shifter. That cable may be broken. There should also be a lock solenoid that requires you to push on the brake pedal to get the shifter out of park.
You would need to disassemble the console to get access to the shifter and then inspect these components.

Okay, you are correct, the key is stuck because of the shifter lock wont release, the most common reason is its stuck, you will need to remove the covering around shift to get to shifter lock release solenoid, there you will clean and lube it, you will need to move it by hand as you spray wd40 on the arms, you will see how it work by pressing the shift release and you will see to lever that gets pushed, it wont move because its stuck but you will see the levers move inside, hope this helps, good day.

My daughter has a 1997 Nissan Altima and the key is stuck in the ignition. The car will start up and run just fine, she just can't get the key out. I guess the ignition won't turn back far enough. Thanks

it sounds like the shift lock thinks the car is still in gear check the shift lock solenoid a make sure it's working properly and you may be able to move it to where itis reading that the car is in park if it does try turning the key on off and removing it if it works replace the solenoid

SAAB 2002 93 automatic gear stuck

you have to push your shift override button? Your cable that runs from your ignition/steering column to your shift knob could be worn and therefore loose not allowing the car the be shifted out of park (as if your key weren't in the ignition). Hope this helps

Key gets stuck in ignition

My daughter drives a Suzuki, my solution to her is: while the gear shift lever is in park, lightly put pressure on the gear shift lever, through the park position and while pressing the gear shift towards park light rock left to right while trying to remove the key.

The interlock between the transmission and the ignition switch needs to be adjusted/ repaired or replaced.

Ford focus zx3 2006

There is a small sleeve just below the shift knob on the ford focus - it can slide down and trigger a sensor in the gear box that tells the car it is not in park even when it is. Push the sensor back up toward the knob (with the car in park) and the key should release.
