Gear shifter stuck in neutral and drive. cannot shift into park to start vehicle

Most vehicles have a small rectangular hole near the base of shifter for override. Sometime you need to flip up the little cover on it. Insert key into that hole and press shifter button and change gear. If the vehicle is not starting, try starting in neutral. Also, turn steering wheel and make sure brake is pressed while trying to start or change gears.

Sorry, sounds like trany time.

I was first going to say the problem is the neutral safety switch, but based on what you said about it being stuck in drive and the shifter can be moved around, I would say the cable is broke or a connector on either end of the cable. The cable connects the shifter with the shift lever on the side of the transmission.
The shift lever is probably under the master cylinder on the driver side.

Its gear shift issues.

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

Check your brake lights, if the system doesn't get a brake lights on signal it will not release park, it is called the park lock system.

There may be two problems. First, the problem with the gear shifter stuck in park. Likely the brake light switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

That will get you out of park and into gear. The second problem with it saying it is in neutral and not park, has to do with adjusting something at the steering column to make it read correctly.

What year, and model, and engine size is your vehicle?

Same thing happened to me today(but while in drive!). had to crawl UNDER vehicle, driver side, behind the transmission where it narrows down, and the shifting rod (connected to your shifter in vehicle) came disconnected from what i assume was a gear knob on transmission. its basically a screw and nut holding the two together. ill temporarily replace it tomorrow until i can order correct screw and nut. hope this is same situation and helps. easy fix.

ps if you push the gear -knob all the way forwards under vehicle, that is in the Park gear.

THERE IS A SENSOR ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THAT RELEASES THE THE SHIFTER.THERE A 3 COMPONENTS INVOLVED.U CAN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL BEFORE U START THE CAR.THEN WIL SHIFT.
