The water pump usually does not break. What happens is the bearing and seal go bad. This can be diagnosed by a growling noise coming from the pump area and also coolant leaking from the worn bearing and seal. Let the engine run and listen very carefully to where the noise is coming from. An old trick is to place a long screwdriver on the pump and then press it to your ear to listen. Make sure you don't have an alternator or an idler bearing making the noise. BE VERY CAREFUL. If the good Lord wanted you to have a shaft protruding from your ears, you would have been born that way.
