Why? If you want to change the strut, and transfer spring to new strut, some Auto parts stores will let you barrow appropriate tools with a significant deposit. They will probably have instructions with their strut/s.
Rear shocks are easy. The front struts are best left to a professional. You can remove the units and take them to the shop. As a option you can purchase assembled units but the are more costly. Step by step instructions for free:
go to www.autozone.com. enter veh. make and model. goto repairs find your part, then goto "out with old, in with the new" ! It gives you detailed step-by-step instructions for repairs or replacements. I use this quite often for repairs on all my vehicles.
You must use a Spring Compressor. Sometimes parts stores will rent them, like Auto Zone. Be careful, its dangerous. You would be better to take them to a garage and have them swap out the strut/ springs for you, then you can put them on the car.
WOW STEP BY STEP! well its not hard im 19 and i have a hyundai xg350L and i change my rear struts by my self with two jacks. one to lift the car, and one to jack the spring and strut back up and under the car. then one vice grip and one pliers to take the nut off the strut and remove it from under the car. you will also need a rench to remove the bolt at the bottom of the strut. IT MIGHT BE A LOT TO DO BUT IM ABOUT TO REPLACE MY SPRINGS AND STRUTS AND REAR WHEEL BEARING AND I WILL POST IT UP AS A INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO ON YOUTUBE.
CHANGING STRUTS REQUIRES A SPECIAL TOOL YOU RENT AT ANY PARTS STORE. THEY ARE NOT BAD FOR SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. THE TOOL HAS INSTRUCTIONS AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THEM STEP BY STEP, YOU'LL BE FINE. SHOPS MAKE WAY TOO MUCH MONEY ON THAT STUFF. THEY GET A 30-40 PERCENT DISCOUNT ON THE PARTS; THEY CHARGE YOU 15 PERCENT MORE THAN WHAT YOU WOULD PAY; AND THEY CHARGE TOO MUCH FOR LABOR. GET A BOOK NEXT TIME AND RENT THE TOOL. YOU'D BE SURPRISED HOW EASY THEY ARE.
